2011 NBA Mock Draft: Full Projections with Tristan Thompson Going to Rockets
The Houston Rockets are the first team in the draft that I look at their roster and see the need to make small tweaks rather than desperately needing to find a star player to put them in playoff position.
The Rockets are very close to being a playoff team out west with the team they have in place. Grabbing Tristan Thompson might just secure that No. 8 seed.
I think Thompson would give the Rockets what Darrell Arthur gives the Memphis Grizzlies. He's a tall, athletic player who can give you points, rebounds, blocks and athletic dunks off the bench. He would likely be the first big man to come in for either Chuck Hayes or Luis Scola. This would allow Brad Miller, who is on the wrong side of 30, play a more limited role.
The idea of a second unit with Goran Dragic and Thompson is very exciting. I see the two of them running a pick and roll like a poor man's Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire. This is the type of combination that may be on such a role that Coach Kevin McHale keeps them in the whole fourth quarter rather than bringing back out Scola and Kyle Lowry.
The Rockets had a very good post All-Star break record and could benefit the most out of any non-playoff team from this year's draft.
