Before UFC 129 Lyoto Machida Says He Wants On UFC Rio Card
Just about 48 hours before one of the most important fights in Lyoto Machida's entire career and he is talking about being a part of the next mega-show that UFC will put on later this year. Machida, who is from Brazil, told Sherdog.com that he wants a fight on the UFC Rio show in August.
From Marcelo Alonso (via Sherdog.com):
My desire [to fight on the card] is so great, Machida told Sherdog.com. Being able to fight here in a big event is part of my dream. I?ve fought in smaller events, but I?d like to fight in a big event in Brazil. I?m waiting for the opportunity, and I?ve heard from people who want to see me there. I?d like to show my appreciation in the Octagon and show a little of our fighting style to the entire public.
That UFC Rio card is already stacked, and adding Machida to it would make it even bigger. He doesn't offer up an opponent in the interview - he just says that he will leave that to the guys in charge.

If Machida were to defeat Randy Couture at UFC 129, he would presumably move near the top of the light heavyweight rankings. That would make a potential fight on the UFC Rio card a No. 1 contender fight for a shot at Jon Jones. Rashad Evans and Phil Davis will battle at UFC 133, but there are no guarantees that if Davis wins he will get a title shot.
All this talk about UFC Rio is great, but if Machida doesn't take care of business this weekend it becomes a moot point. He wants to get back into title contention, and in order to do that he has to defeat the legend of Randy Couture in two days.
