UFC 132 Results Have Wanderlei Silva Hitting the Mat After 27 Seconds
UFC 132 was supposed to be the comeback party for one of the sport's great champions as it featured the long awaited return of the Wanderlei Silva.
Silva is one of the sports all-time greats and most accomplished fighters. He dominated Pride's middleweight (205lbs) division before switching to the UFC. Silva switched as he seemed to be falling off of his game.
He ended his Pride career with knockout losses to Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic and Dan Henderson. He then started his UFC career with knockout losses to Chuck Liddell and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.
Silva then decided to get away. He took over a year and entered UFC 132 with new hope.
Part of the reason Silva was optimistic because, after a break, he has been training under Master [Rafael] Cordeiro again. Silva:
Finally man. I'm an old style student. I need a master. I can't have just a coach. I need a master.
The difference ... the guy knows all about me. He knows my movements. He looks at you training and he knows. "You need to do that. You move that leg here. ... " He knows all. We started working in the gym sparring and he said do this, do this, do this. It's a different connection.
Well, that hope and his comeback bid lasted all of 27 seconds. That's right. It was only 27 seconds before Silva was unconscious due to the swinging hands of Chris Leben. For Leben the formula was pretty simple. Leben:
Wanderlei came forward and hit me. I hit him. You know what happened after that.
Prior to the match Silva had said he thought he had 10 more matches in him. After the match we are not sure what he was thinking?he might not be either after that knockout. Silva was rushed to the hospital before he could comment.
Dana White told the press he would urge Silva to retire. Adding:
People love him so much because of the way he fights and his style and the type of person he is. But that?s probably the end of the road for Wanderlei.
Whit added that Silva has nothing left to prove. He is right, and hopefully Silva listens.
