Donovan McNabb Could Fill Vikings Quarterback Void Until Christian Ponder Matures
Donovan McNabb had a miserable year in 2010. He was at odds with his coaches, seemed unsure about his game and even saw time on the bench with the Redskins.
It's unfair to place judgement on where McNabb is as a football player based upon one bad year. McNabb has proven his worth in the NFL time and time again.
He's not the McNabb who took the Eagles to the NFC Championship time and time again, but he doesn't have to be. The Minnesota Vikings inquired about the possibility of bringing McNabb in, which would be the perfect place for McNabb to fall.
Unlike Washington, he would have weapons at his disposal and he has a good history with Leslie Frazier. McNabb could essentially come into an offense with the best running back in the game and a number of young weapons to get the ball to.
Sydney Rice's status is uncertain at this point, but the Vikings still have talent on their roster. McNabb would be coming in as a mentor to Christian Ponder, who the Vikings selected in the 1st round of the 2011 draft.
It would give Ponder time to learn the offense and the position and potentially get Minnesota back to 2009 form. The team saw a huge return on their gamble to bring in Brett Favre. They would be looking for the same sort of low risk production from McNabb, whose intangibles are off the charts as well.
The Vikings are competing in a ferocious division. The Packers won the Super Bowl, the Bears won the division and the Lions are one of the NFL teams most on the rise.
If the Vikings want to avoid slipping into irrelevancy, they are going to need to avoid throwing Ponder into the fire so readily. There are a lot of bad teams with dominant running backs. In the NFL, going into the season with a shaky quarterback situation is a recipe for disaster.
While Ponder could eventually assume the starting role, there is no way the Vikings can go into next season with him being the only viable option under center. If this happens, it's a great move for everyone involved.
