Michael Phelps: Ryan Lochte Tops Phelps, Sets New World Record in 200m IM

Michael Phelps Defeated by Fellow American Ryan Lochte

A world record has finally been broken and it wasn't Michael Phelps that broke it. In the post techsuit era, no one had broken a world record, going on a year and a half, until Ryan Lochte broke through at the 200m Individual Medley.

He finished with a time of 1:54.00, breaking the world record by a tenth of a second. Coincidentally, he set the previous world record at the 2009 FINA World Championships.

Don't discount Michael Phelps though who finished just six-hundredths of a second behind the old world record, which was the third fastest time ever in the race.

After the race, Lochte had this to say to Swimming World Magazine,

All I can say is summed up in one word?Jeah! That's really all. I knew it was going to be a battle between Michael [Phelps] and I but I got the better end this time. Anytime you break a world record you have to be excited. I trained hard and it paid off.

The gold was Lochte's second of the event, while Phelps has just one gold medal so far. Phelps still has the 100m butterfly final to go and will likely be the favorite in that event.

However, this is the second time that Lochte has knocked off Phelps for a gold medal in this year's World Championships, could this be the beginning of the Ryan Lochte era?

It just might be. With only one year to go before the 2012 London Olympics, Lochte owns the title of top American swimmer.
