The Minnesota Timberwolves know the production they?re going to get out of Kevin Love, Michael Beasley, Darko Milicic and Luke Rindour. Wesley Johnson and Derrick Williams are still young and developing, but they?re both already penciled in as future starters. There are two huge x-factors on the team and if a coach can get those two players to fulfill their potential, the T-Wolves will be a playoff contender in the next couple of years.
Ricky Rubio and Anthony Randolph are the two players. Rubio?s vision and passion skills are elite and Randolph, thanks to a late growth-spurt, is a match-up nightmare. Each player would thrive in a high-paced offensive attack and no available coach would be better to install that attack than Don Nelson.
The three-time NBA Coach of the Year and all-time wins leader?s system hasn?t translated into winning championships, but it?s definitely translated into turning teams around and scoring points in bunches. Nelson is 71 years old so by the time the T-Wolves do become a championship contender, he would most likely retire again for good, but he would be the perfect coach to jumpstart the squad into success for someone else to eventually take over.
Ricky Rubio would be in heaven in Don Nelson?s offense. Rubio?s ceiling comparison is Steve Nash and Nelson coached Nash in Dallas for four years. The coach would also be able to take advantage of Anthony Randolph?s combination of size and athleticism in his fast-paced offense.
The Star Tribune reported that Nelson is very interested in the job. The coach said, "I think it'd be a great fit. I love Minnesota."
Nelson isn?t going to improve their league-worst defense, but he?ll instantly turn the T-Wolves offense into one of the best in the NBA.
