When it ended dramatically for the Vikings last season, with Brett Favre coming up an ankle and prayer short of winging the Vikings past the Saints in overtime of the NFC title game, one of the first people to embrace the creaky old quarterback in the loser's locker room was his team's defensive coordinator, Leslie Frazier.
So why would anyone think that as the Vikings' new interim head coach -- the title Frazier was awarded on Monday after Brad Childress finally was sacked as head coach -- Frazier's first order of business, in what absolutely just became a lost season for the Vikings, would be to turn his back on the quarterback who almost got him back to the Super Bowl?
"There's no hesitation for me in that regard," Frazier said at his Monday press conference. "Brett Favre will be our starting quarterback on Sunday."

Frazier's inaugural call as an NFL coach to stick with Favre was as understandable as it was appropriate.
It was understandable because Frazier has seen Favre's backup, Tavaris Jackson, who after five seasons has a career passer rating below 80, and the third string quarterback, rookie Joe Webb from UAB, whose future is probably as a wide receiver. The best way Frazier can finally become an NFL head coach sans interim title is to win games and Favre, who just a few weeks ago had a career-best outing, gives Frazier the best chance to do so.
Frazier's decision was appropriate, however, because there is but one reason to pay attention to the Vikings for the rest of this season: Favre. Why, after this most miserable of campaigns for him? To see if he can manage to stay in one piece and upright long enough to make it to the 300 consecutive games started mark.
