Andre Berto Defeats Freddy Hernandez Via First-Round Knockout

Thank the boxing gods the person who rung my doorbell didn't need much from me, otherwise I would've missed this fight. I caught the tailend of the Andre Berto Vs. Freddy Hernandez fight which aired on HBO on the Juan Manuel Marquez Vs. Katsidis undercard and ended in the first round via a hard right cross from Berto that blasted through Freddy Hernandez's defensive stance and buried into the graveyard of Hernandez's face.

Rest in Peace.

Hernandez had a 29-1 record before this fight and has now collected the second loss of his career. He couldn't get up by the time the referee finished the ten count.

This isn't setting Berto up for any spectacular matches, but it does give him another victory and another knockout to bolster his total record to 27 victories with 21 of them coming by way of knockout.

Last Saturday saw a high profile black fighter lose brutally at the hands of Hispanic fighter Sergio Martinez. Sergio Martinez delivered Paul Williams the first knockout loss of his career. In turn on November 27 2010, Berto delivered the first KO loss of Hernandez's professional boxing career.

Hispanic fighters going against Black fighters has often in the past produced interesting and dynamic matchups that drive audiences to debate each fighters merit and become fans of either combatant. With a knockout victory such as this though, a gaining of fans is not likely, but a progression forward is guaranteed, even if not majorly forward.

A little food for thought on Berto's title reign. His reign began on June 21 2008.

He's successfully defended his title five times.

The record for the most Welterweight title defenses belongs to Henry Armstrong with 18 successful title defenses.

The record for the longest Welterweight title reign belongs to Freddie Cochran. Cochran held the title for four year, six months, and three days.

If Wikipedia is to be believed, then Berto already has roughly two years to beat the record for the longest title reign and 13 more defenses is a significantly doable task in a division that is void of talent outside the top two members of that division who many don't ever wanting to take on the up and coming Andre Berto simply because the risk doesn't come with much reward.

Berto may not get very far for the future is never certain, but considering his opposition, he might be able to break a few records over the course of his career.
