'ThunderCats' Premiere: Five Things You Should Know About The New Show

Lion-O'ThunderCats' HOOOOOO!

Sorry, I just had to get that out of my system. It's been 20 years since the intrepid inhabitants of Thundera last roared across our screens (yes, the original series ended in 1989), and since then, 'ThunderCats' has lived on in the minds of nostalgic Gen X-ers and millennials through T-shirts and trips to YouTube, gone and mostly forgotten.

Our memories may be forgiving, but the well-intentioned series doesn't exactly hold up to repeat views (select episodes are available on KidsWB.com, if you're curious) and the campy costumes and earnest dialogue seemed long overdue for an update. Cartoon Network has taken up the task, turning to Studio 4°C, the animation house behind portions of the 'Batman: Gotham Knight' and 'Animatrix' movies to update the visuals. The tone is darker, the story more focused and relatable, and the dynamics between characters have shifted to reveal new conflicts that will drive the narrative. All in all, it's nothing to Snarf at.

Join us after the jump for our take on the new series, including five facts you should know before watching. Mild spoilers ahead.

Mint "busy developing an iPad App"

Apple fans who are still looking for a replacement for Quicken or Quicken Essentials on the Mac might want to hold out for the Mint iPad app. The company has been hounded by iPad users for quite some time to make a native app, and TUAW reader Steve C. pointed out that the company has admitted that they're working on a "brand new experience for the iPad."

In the note above, found on Mint's GetSatisfaction support forum, Mint Customer Advocacy Director Stephen Mann notes that they can't confirm any dates yet and are asking Mint users to "please hold on for just a little while longer."

Mint's free iPhone app has been extremely popular with users, with a 4.5-star rating for the current version on the App Store. The company is part of Intuit, and its web-based app is known for excellent budgeting and automatic categorization functions.

MLB Trades: Who Could Still Move on the Waiver Wire in August?

Although the 2011 non-waiver MLB trade deadline is behind us, there are still a lot of moves to be made. Teams like the New York Yankees, who remained quiet through the non-waiver trade deadline, could become major players in August.

The trade deadline has come and gone, but players are still eligible to be dealt if they can clear waivers. Once Aug. 1 hits, teams are going to be looking at picking up the guys who've cleared.

Let's take a look at five guys who might move on the waiver wire in August.

Apple using smaller, cheaper Thunderbolt controller in MacBook Airs

Like their big brothers, the new MacBook Air models now include a Thunderbolt port. Though it looks the same on the outside, internally the Air's Thunderbolt controller is much different from the one found in the 2011 iMac, MacBook Pro and Mac mini line.

To fit a Thunderbolt controller in its thin chassis, the MacBook Air includes a controller that is half the size of the one found in other 2011 Mac models. Codenamed Eagle Ridge, this smaller chip includes two Thunderbolt 10 Gbps channels (instead of four) and one display port output (instead of two).

Beside size, this chip may also be less expensive, notes Anandtech, which means it might show up in machines from other manufacturers; especially those companies looking to keep the cost of their hardware to a minimum.

MLB Trade Deadline: Erik Bedard and the Future of the Mariners' Rotation

As most Mariners fans know, Doug Fister was traded to the Detroit Tigers on Saturday. I wanted the Mariners to keep Fister and certainly reliever David Pauley, whose low ERA for some reason flew under the radar to most of the baseball world. I used to think that if anyone should be traded, it should be Jason Vargas, and the Mariners should keep Fister and Pauley to bolster their rotation and bullpen for years to come. Fister is only 27, Pauley is 28.

Now, after learning more about this trade and reflecting on it, I've decided that the Mariners shouldn't stop here, and they also should trade Erik Bedard. His ERA is currently 3.45, and his body is finally healthy (finally!). Today may be the last day that teams would be interested in trading for Bedard. The Mariners need to make a last-ditch effort to get prospects like they did with Doug Fister today. The Mariners got a few solid prospects out of Fister, and look for close to the same kind of deal to come together for Bedard if he is traded.

Now, I've heard from some people that it would be risky for the Mariners to trade away two of their starting five pitchers in a matter of a few days. This argument does hold some weight, but ultimately it doesn't matter. The Mariners are loaded with starting pitchers and potential starting pitchers. Their starting five already can be further bolstered by lefty Charlie Furbursh and young flamethrower Blake Beavan.

Beavan's potential is through the roof and deserves to be tested, Furbursh may be a transition starter for now, but ultimately could end up as a solid bullpen pitcher and valuable reliever. Along with Felix Hernandez, Michael Pineda and Jason Vargas, Furbursh and Beavan could still provide an amazing rotation for the Mariners. All of this would be without the prospects from the Bedard trade and without the Mariners new gem, Danny Hultzen. When the former Virginia Cavaliers lefty comes up to the majors in 2012, expect one heck of a player to add to an already young and deadly rotation.

The Mariners could have a starting five of King Felix, Michael Pineda, Jason Vargas, Blake Beavan and Danny Hultzen. Scary good and scary young. Get ready, MLB.

So Seattle, why not take the chance with Beavan, and attempt to get as much for Bedard now as we will be able to ever? Now is the time, pull the trigger Jack.

iPhone 4 noise cancellation chip demoed with comparison video

Last summer, when the folks at iFixit first did a tear down of the iPhone 4, one of the interesting tidbits they revealed was that the iPhone 4 has two mics (which is more than most other cell phones), and that it has a white-labelled (manufacturers details removed upon request from Apple) noise cancellation chip in it. The idea being that ambient noise is identified by the second mic, and processed and cancelled out by the chip -- leaving the person listening to whoever is speaking into the iPhone 4 with much clearer audio.

Furthermore, a few months ago, you may have noticed that iFixit -- along side the help of Chipworks -- revealed the unbranded chip to be a low power audio signal processor manufactured by Audience. The same noise cancellation chip found in the Google Nexus One phone.

While that in itself may not be all that interesting, we thought you may be interested in the YouTube video iFixit sourced to demonstrate the power of the Audience chip. The video below is a recording of two separate voice mail messages called from the same noisy location, but on two different phones. One is from an unnamed, standard cell phone, the other is from the iPhone 4.

Apple allegedly approves Pegatron for iPad 3 production, but is not replacing Foxconn

According to Taiwan Economic News, Taiwan-based Pegatron has outbid Foxconn for production of Apple's next-gen iPad (or "iPad 3" until/unless Steve Jobs gives it a better name). While other news outlets such as BGR are reporting this as an exclusive contract (meaning Foxconn would no longer produce the iPad 3), our interpretation differs. Instead, it seems Apple is diversifying production of the iPad 3 across both Foxconn and Pegatron.

"Hon Hai is likely to turn Apple's another contract order for iPad 3 manufacturing over the Taiwanese counterpart, as the customer has considered looking for a second iPad supplier to reduce over-dependence on Hon Hai," the Taiwanese report indicates (emphasis ours). The wording here seems to point to two factories producing the iPad 3, not just one.

Spreading iPad 3 production over two contractors makes more sense than shutting Foxconn out completely. Having two contractors manufacturing the iPad 3 should theoretically go a long way toward lightening the supply constraints that have plagued the iPad line from the beginning. Apple execs have repeatedly said that iPads are being sold "as fast as we can make them," and the only thing holding the iPad back from raking in even more profits for Apple has been Foxconn's inability to churn them out fast enough to satisfy demand.

Rather than abandoning Foxconn, adding Pegatron to the mix means iPad production should increase enough to satisfy the great demand for the device. Earlier reports indicated Apple was indeed looking for a second supplier for iPad 3 units, not an outright replacement for Foxconn. A later report indicated Hon Hai (owner of Foxconn) said it would be able to handle production of the iPad 3 all by itself, but if the latest report from Taiwan Economic News is accurate, Apple apparently disagrees.

TUAW's Daily iPhone App: Cordy

Cordy is a fun little platformer that was originally released on Android, but has now come to iOS. The game's cute and relatively non-threatening -- you play as an adorable little robot, and instead of going up against bad guys, the main goal here is exploration. There are four levels to play through for free, and a full in-app purchase fills that out to 27. The action can get fast if you go for the timed challenges, but really, the game's all about just jumping around the levels, finding gears, and using the various mechanics to explore.

You can pick up the title to try it out for free on either iPad or iPhone. If you enjoy a solid platformer, give it a look for sure.

WWE's Apex Predator: An Awesome Analysis and Defense of the Viper, Randy Orton

I have taken it upon myself to defend Randy Orton from the vitriolic attacks from the same IWC who proclaimed him the face of the company just a year ago.

I will not delve in to his personal life. Generally I do not believe in writing about celebrities' personal lives.

But I will defend four much-maligned aspects of Randy Orton's WWE career.

1. Randy Orton's in-ring ability

2. Randy Orton's gimmick

3. Randy Orton's backstage problems

4. Randy Orton's lack of charisma/mic skills

These four supposed weaknesses of Orton are not entirely unique to him.

For example, John Cena is alleged to be a terrible wrestler.

However his match with CM Punk was renowned wrestling pundit Dave Meltzer's first 5 star match in the WWE since 1996. If anything this proves Cena can wrestle when he wants to.

Randy Orton is no different. When he is not limited to his chinlocks and his other moves of doom he can be great in the ring.

Orton's in-ring ability

Now I would like to discuss Randy Orton's supposedly awful in-ring abilities.

First of all he has always wrestled a slow style.

As a heel he methodically destroyed his opponents. As a face he still maintains his methodical wrestling style while taking on a typical face's moveset.

His methodical style is often mistaken for poor in-ring ability. It might be boring but Orton's Viper gimmick requires him to work a slow style.

It's like saying the Dallas Mavericks are a terrible basketball team because they slow the game down at times.

Orton's slow style is not caused by a lack of athleticism. Orton can perform a dropkick with ease. The RKO takes a lot of athletic ability to safely perform.

It is not his fault that he has five moves of doom. His case is similar to John Cena in that WWE is purposely limiting them to their five moves of doom.

Second of all he has had great matches with various match types.

He wrestled Mick Foley at Backlash 2004 in a hardcore match. He put on a great match with Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series back in 2007. Orton's WrestleMania match with Undertaker was an instant classic.

Critics of Orton might suggest he was only good as the Legend Killer.

Not true.

In his Viper gimmick he has had great matches with the likes of Chris Jericho, CM Punk, and Christian.

He even had an Ironman match with John Cena back in 2009.

It is true Orton's slow style can't be compatible with everyone's style. His matches with a powerhouse like a Mark Henry would be very boring to watch at times.

But give an opponent compatible to Orton's wrestling style (E.G. Christian) and then you can see Orton put on great matches.

Randy Orton evolved from his Legend Killer gimmick to the Viper gimmick overtime.

If you watch the video when he faced Shawn Michaels, Jim Ross referred to Randy Orton as the Viper. His mannerisms were increasingly becoming like an actual snake.

With that said to say Randy Orton can't wrestle is ignorant.

Which transitions into the next aspect of my defense.

Randy Orton's gimmick

Randy Orton's gimmick change from the "good" Legend Killer gimmick to the "bad" Viper gimmick saw several changes.

First off there was the theme song change from Burn in My Light to Voices.

The only thing consistent with the two gimmicks is his finishing move.

The RKO is the most exciting finishing move in the WWE. But the Viper added another element to make him even more dangerous.

The trademark punt to the skull truly makes him the sadistic Viper.

Orton's backstage problems

With Orton's in-ring prowess covered, now I will defend Orton's backstage problems.

There was an accusation's surrounding Orton's treatment of Rachel Loewen and Amy Weber. It appeared Orton sexually harassed the two WWE employees.

However those allegations were false according to Mark Jindrak, a WWE superstar at the time. Current TNA interviewer and former WWE employee Christy Hemme also thought Orton didn't do anything wrong.

Now let's move on to the trashing the hotel room rumor.

As the Miz would say, really?

Entertainers and celebrities are notorious for mistreating hotel rooms. Lots of things can happen since these entertainers are often on the road.

Randy Orton is no exception.

Moreover, Orton was never confirmed to have trashed the room.

Now we move on to the allegation Randy Orton had Ken Anderson (AKA Mr. Kennedy) fired.

Once again, that allegation was never proven to be true.

Anderson was fired for two reasons.

1. He was injury-prone.

2. He was noted to be sloppy in the ring.

It's a shame Anderson didn't make it big in the WWE. However Randy Orton did not run off Anderson. John Cena and Shawn Michaels also complained about Anderson's sloppy in-ring work.

Now with Ken Anderson's case squared away, Kofi Kingston is up next.

It is true Randy Orton yelled at Kingston towards the end of a match on Raw. Kofi did botch the finish of the match. I do blame Orton for being unprofessional about it.

But let's be perfectly honest; Kofi Kingston is not worthy of the main event.

Lack of Charisma/Mic Skills

This is what really inspired me to write this article.

Randy Orton does have charisma and mic skills; but not in a way you can see it.

As the Viper, Randy Orton must conform to his gimmick. Do you expect him to start cutting promos like the Rock?

Charisma is a tough term to define. Orton manages to draw people to him with his mannerisms and his evil grin. That is a loose definition of charisma.

As for the mic skills part Randy Orton was great on the mic as the Legend Killer.

He is still good on the mic. But Randy Orton the Viper must speak in a different tone than Randy Orton the Legend Killer.

Randy Orton the Viper must talk in a slow manner to compliment his in-ring style. He does not always talk slow either.

Is he the greatest talker of all-time? No.

But to say Randy Orton can't talk is not looking at the whole picture of Orton's career or his current gimmick.

Closing Thoughts

Yes I am a fan of the Viper. I grew tired of articles constantly attacking him for being the top dog on SmackDown.

Orton does have some positive things going for him.

He has a great family with a wife and a daughter back in St. Louis. He is very user-friendly on twitter. User-friendly meaning he takes the time to respond to questions.

To top off my argument, Shawn Michaels himself said in an interview with Bill Simmons of ESPN that Orton is the future face of the company.

Thanks for reading!

Dear Aunt TUAW: If I sell my old Mac, does Lion go with it?

Dear Aunt TUAW,

So, the last time I sold a Mac I bundled it up with my Tiger install discs and sent it on its way, but having installed Lion on my MacBook and readying my bank account for the impending purchase of a MacBook Air, what happens to Lion when this laptop goes to the big eBay in the sky?

Can I sell something on if I don't own the physical product?
If it's tied to my iTunes account does it take records of my associated email account with it?

Your loving nephew,

Matt

Dear Matt,

Auntie is not a lawyer. She does not even play a lawyer on TV. But as a completely unqualified non-expert, here's how the matters seem to shake out.

  • App Store Lion licenses follow the account and not the hardware
  • Pre-installed licenses follow the hardware, and not the account
  • The install process from the recovery partition seems to follow the hardware as well.

Preinstalled Lion

Here's what Apple says about hardware that came with Lion.

If you obtained the Apple Software preinstalled on Apple-branded hardware, you may make a one-time permanent transfer of all of your license rights to the Apple Software (in its original form as provided by Apple) to another party...

Hardware that already had Lion on it, can be sold and the license transfers with it. You can restore the machine to its virginal state and sell it off. The new user should be able to use the recovery partition to re-install the OS whenever needed. Your e-mail should not be involved.

Since the hardware is newer, should the hard drive fail, the user should be able to use the over-the-air restore process.

That process does not seem to involve any user authentication. The hardware likely checks in with some kind of central Apple database that associates the machine ID with shipped-with-Lion install, but Apple is being closed lipped as usual in disclosing how the eligibility is determined. Auntie guesses it's the hardware identity.

Upgraded to Lion

For pre-Lion hardware, Apple takes a firmer line. Here's what they say about selling systems to third parties.

If you sell your Apple-branded hardware to a third party, you must remove the Apple Software from the Apple- branded hardware before doing so, and you may restore your system to the version of the Apple operating system software that originally came with your Apple hardware (the "Original Apple OS") and permanently transfer the Original Apple OS together with your Apple hardware...

So as far as Apple is concerned, you still "ship with DVDs" but you also need to downgrade to the original OS. That means completely wiping the drive to remove the recovery partition as well as experiencing all the joys of an OS re-install from DVD.

Auntie suggests another way. Starting in August, you will be able to purchase an install dongle at the Apple Store. That additional $69 may simplify the whole process and the questions behind it ownership transfer.

When you ship a dongle along with a newly dongle-installed machine, you ensure that the new user can start fresh and will have a full license of their own. Of course, that extra $69 takes a bite out of your profit margin. But you'll be selling Lion-installed hardware rather than whatever your system started out with. (Do make sure to send the original install DVDs as well.)

Dongle installs shouldn't be associated with your identity either. So again, you should be safe there as well.

Hugs,

Auntie T.
