2011 NFL Mock Draft: Is Ryan Mallett the Future of the Seattle Seahawks?

2011 NFL Mock Draft Has Mixed Picks for the Seattle Seahawks at No. 25

The Seattle Seahawks have a major need at quarterback and this should be the opportune time for them to make a move for a young player they like.

They also have needs on the interior of both the offensive and defensive lines, could use a cornerback in their secondary and really do not have a whole to be picky about in general.

They won a postseason game this past year, but that was more on the surprising side to say the least.

If they want to compete in the NFC West again, they have to make some decisions quickly in this draft.

Mel Kiper Jr.: Jake Locker

Locker has worked hard to help scouts forget about a bad season of tape, and did enough at his recent pro day to get more positive vibes attached to his stock among evaluators. As we've said before, Locker has a big-time arm, a great attitude, elite athleticism for the position, but has unfortunately lacked accuracy, the one trait most of us believe is the most innate. But I wouldn't put it past him to improve that, given the kind of kid he is, and his range of talent. This isn't an endorsement of Locker as a guy who should step in and start for the Seahawks if Matt Hasselbeck isn't back in 2011, but even if Seattle makes a move for a short-term answer at quarterback, Locker could be hard to pass up if Pete Carroll thinks he's a solution for the long run.

Rob Rang: Jimmy Smith

The Seahawks gave up 31 touchdown passes last season, tied for third-worst in the NFL. Veteran Marcus Trufant is due $5.8 million for 2011 and has struggled with injury and consistency the past two seasons. Seattle's other starter, Kelly Jennings, is a free agent and at 5-11, 180, isn't an ideal fit in the Seahawks' press scheme. Smith, on the other hand, at 6-2, 211, is an ideal fit. His character concerns will scare off many teams, but under general manager John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll, the Seahawks have shown a willingness to gamble.

Pat Kirwan: Jimmy Smith

The Seahawks need a big, physical corner. With Locker off the board, they grab Smith. Look for Seattle to be major players for Kevin Kolb when the CBA problems are resolved. If that fails, the Seahawks can re-sign Matt Hasselbeck.

Jeff Risdon: Ryan Mallett

Just a guess, Seahawks fans, just a guess...

My pick: Ryan Mallett

The most interesting thing to note is all the quarterback chatter at this pick.

Between Mallett and Locker it seems like not just one, but probably both, should be first round picks.

In Locker's case he will need some time to develop, but I also had him off the board quite a while ago.

As for Mallett, he's got the best pure arm in all the draft, but has more than a few alarming character concerns (to the media anyway).

He will actually be a pretty good fit with the Seahawks and could become a player early with the offensive pieces in place up there.
