Over the years, the MTV Video Music Awards have earned the reputation of being the one and only major awards show where it's not only OK, but actually encouraged, to really let your freak flag fly.

As we patiently wait to see how the stars will try to outdo one another with their outrageous red carpet fashions at this year's big event (Sun., Aug. 28, 9PM ET on MTV), we're taking a look back at VMA red carpet history and all its horrors.

From the nearly nude numbers, to the catastrophic costumes and the most foul fashion faux pas, we've pulled the craziest looks from past VMA red carpets and compiled them into one, glamor-gone-oh-so-wrong photo gallery.

There's Lil' Kim's purple pasty and Hammer pants taken to the extreme, Christina Aguilera looking all 'Dirrty' and Britney Spears in head-to-toe leather. It's possibly the most "wow" fashion photo gallery we've ever seen.
