San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh can't be happy with what he has seen from his team this preseason. Through three games, the offense has scored 20 points and the quarterbacks have yet to throw a touchdown pass. That is why their final preseason game against the Chargers will be critical.
Most teams do not take the final preseason game seriously. Starters might play two series before they are taken out and the idea is to get through the game healthy. But when a team has struggled like the 49ers have this preseason the starters should play more than normal to find a rhythm heading into the regular season.
Alex Smith did enough in the offseason to convince Harbaugh that he was a quarterback who could lead a team to the playoffs. But so far he has done little to inspire confidence that this season will be any different than his previous six seasons.
Through three games, Smith is 12-for-26 passing with 153 yards and two interceptions. He has led the offense on one scoring drive - a field goal against the Raiders - and has been unable to finish drives in the red zone.
No one thought that the 49ers were going to be world beaters this year, but their performance on offense this preseason has been pathetic.
The poor performance from the offense is putting more pressure on the defense and causing them to give up more points than they should.
The Chargers are not going to play their regulars for too long in this game, and that will give the 49ers the chance to get their first team into some kind of groove before the opener against Seattle.
It is doubtful that they will be able to do it given their ineptitude thus far, but any points scored by the offense in this game will be a huge improvement over what they have done in the first three games.
