Matt Painter: Purdue Coach Painter Reportedly Heading To Missouri Tigers?

Big Ten Coach Of The Year Matt Painter Leaving Purdue?

Matt Painter, winner of two consecutive Big Ten Coach of the Year awards is reportedly close to leaving the Purdue Boilermakers for the Big 12 as the new coach of the Missouri Tigers.

Earlier today, Dick Weiss of the NY Daily News tweeted Painter to Mizzou was a done deal.  But Joe Walljasper of the Columbia Chronicle in Missouri tweets (@JoeWallsper): "Dick Weiss of NY Daily News tweets Painter to Mizzou. But I was told tonight that it is premature. Decision likely by Wednesday."

First thoughts on the possible Painter departure from Purdue is: What was he thinking?  It's clearly a downgrade for Painter who has had a successful run with the Boilermakers, ranked No. 13 by the AP at the end of the season, going to a Mizzou team that finished out of the Top 25.

But there's more to the story.  Despite working in his home state of Indiana and being the hand-picked successor and coach-in-waiting for Gene Keady he was simply not getting paid.

According to Indystar.com: "Painter?s incentive-laden compensation package at Purdue is worth roughly $1.3 million a year and ranks in the bottom half of the Big Ten.

"Missouri is in position to offer a package in excess of $2 million a year and a higher budget to pay assistant coaches."

Money is the issue and Mizzou is reportedly offering Painter a 7-year-deal worth $14 million.  With that kind of security, Painter is clearly intrigued with the idea of leaving a team that he has led to at least 25 wins each of the last four season.
