In just six preseason games, Liverpool gave up 15 goals.
Because of this, Liverpool?s American owners are willing to throw some cash around to land a solid central defender for the regular season.
Stoke star Ryan Shawcross has been linked to the Reds recently, but with a price tag of around 18 million pounds, it?s not likely manager Kenny Dalglish will get his primary choice, according to Metro.co.uk.
The Reds have been reported as offering 10 million pounds for the 23-year-old.
That leaves Bolton?s Gary Cahill as a possibility, who would cost less money than Shawcross. And although he still would be a bit pricey, after Liverpool?s disappointing 1-1 season-opening draw against Sunderland on Saturday, the Reds are now reportedly looking into dangling David Ngog for the 25-year-old defender as part of a package deal.
Cahill, valued at 17 million pounds, has also been linked to Arsenal, but it appears the Gunners don?t want to meet the asking price or offer any players in exchange.
One thing?s for sure: For a Liverpool team that came into the season with a chance to qualify for Champions League competition, there appear to be some serious holes on the team, holes big enough for Premier League foes to slide through on their way to the goal.
Dalglish knows he needs a difference-maker on defense; it?s just a matter of who he can get.
