(What you are about to read is an almagamation of perspectives from CNNSI.com, ESPN.com, and NFL DraftScout.com, which is essentially just CBSSports.com.)
Strengths: Very athletic, tall, lengthy, and blessed with some of the softer hands this side of anybody wearing Earth Therapeutics.
Smart player, adept at finding soft spots in zone coverage and shows good burst, allowing him to separate from defenders in man.
Will be one of the elite jump ball threats in the league from day one, and consistently makes acrobatic catches look easy. Willing to go over the middle as well.
He?s clearly a difference-making receiver?in 2010, Georgia was 1-3 without him and 5-4 with him?who?s been productive for three years against NFL-caliber SEC cornerbacks.
In summation, probably the best receiver to enter the NFL since Calvin Johnson.
Seems like a really good kid.
Weaknesses: Not the sharpest route runner in the draft, but still good.
Strength isn?t a huge issue, but it could be improved. He can at times be out muscled by more physical corners (i.e. Patrick Peterson), and isn?t a top-tier run blocker either (probably the one area where he is dwarfed by the abilities of Julio Jones).
Missed three games due to injury in 2009, four due to suspension (for violating NCAA rules) in 2010.
Perspectives:
Rob Rang, via ESPN:
A.J. Green is taller and has better playing speed. Even when he is covered, he is still open because the kid just makes catches. It's like Larry Fitzgerald, Sidney Rice, Randy Moss -- they go up in the air and they can soar over everyone else and catch the football. They win those one-on-one battles. That is what he does. He just has phenomenal hands.
Peter King, SI.com:
I'm told the Bengals, who have the fourth pick and are considering a receiver, have Jones ahead of Green on their preliminary draft board. Coach Marvin Lewis wouldn't go that far this morning at the annual NFL meetings, but there's no question he's studying each guy. "That's the fun of the draft,'' Lewis said. "Sometimes we as teams all look at things slightly differently. But they're both going to be outstanding players. They're big, they play the game physically, they run well.
"A.J. has demonstrated acrobatic catching ability. They both have a big catching radius. Julio has been a tenacious blocker. The question is, what do you value most?''
Why he?s a fit for Arizona:
PFT?s Dan Arkush, relaying sentiments from a Cardinals? team insider: ?If there weren?t so many other holes, it (the WR situation) would probably be a much bigger deal.?
A.J. Green might represent not only the best player available at five, but also a solution to a need at present under the radar in Arizona.
In Green, the Cardinals would presume to be getting both Larry Fitzgerald insurance and the best number-two receiver in the league?kind of like Anquan Boldin was before he left for Baltimore.
