Marcell Dareus, Nick Fairley A No Brainer, But Offense Must Come Later
At the third overall pick, the Buffalo Bills have a pretty easy choice to make. They are desperate for muscle up front to improve the NFL?s worst run defense. They should be able to grab either Marcell Dareus from Alabama or Nick Fairley from Auburn: it?s unlikely that they?ll go one-two.
But after that choice is where it starts to get interesting.
Early in the season, Buffalo was winless and becoming a laughing stock across the NFL. But they weren?t really as bad as their record indicated.
They found themselves a nice quarterback in Ryan Fitzpatrick (which is why I think they should avoid Blaine Gabbert or Cam Newton with that third overall pick) and as a failsafe they?ll have a good shot at Andrew Luck next April.
And with C.J. Spiller they have a back for the future.
It?s the terribly clichd ?playmaker? spot where they need help. Steve Johnson (his game winning touchdown drop notwithstanding) is a decent player, and they still have Lee Evans. But Chan Gailey would love to have another weapon for the passing game. Should Notre Dame tight end Kyle Rudolph be available early in the second round that could provide a major boost and a nice outlet for Fitzpatrick. The same goes for one of the second-tier wired receivers like Jon Baldwin, who new defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt can advise or Leonard Hankerson from Miami.
The Bills are a long way from becoming a playoff team?especially in a division with the Patriots, Jets, and a Dolphins team that could become a contender at some point in 2011.
But their climb back to respectability is underway and if they do nab a hole-plugger like Dareus and the offense makes strides with Spiller and a rookie pass catcher, 8-8 is not totally out of the realm of possibility for the starving Bills and their fans.
