Johnny Cueto Likely To Miss Start of Season due to Shoulder Injury
The Cincinnati Reds will be without one of their main starters when the season opens as Johnny Cueto will spend the start of the season on the shelf due to shoulder inflammation.
What this means for the Reds is simple: Homer Bailey, Travis Wood, and Mike Leake will all be in the rotation when the season begins. One of them may be moved to the bullpen relatively quickly, since the Reds are downplaying the injury and not considering it to be a big deal.
When there is a problem with a pitcher's shoulder, however, I consider it a major concern no matter how minor it is. A shoulder injury can be tricky to heal, even if it's merely rest, and long-term problems can result.
On top of that, Homer Bailey ended up missing a good part of the season with the same injury. Still, according to Reds' GM Walt Jockety, there are no structural issues. He says of the injury, according to MLB.com, "the recommendation from Dr. Kremchek is to shut him down for a week or so and give it a chance to subside and get him back on a throwing program."
While that sounds all well and good, as I've noted above this is not something that can be tossed aside. He could easily come back in two weeks without any trouble. However, he could also return in two months just as easily, and the Reds want the young guns in the rotation set up sooner rather than later this year so there are no problems.
