Toro Y Moi ? Still Sound

Maybe it’s just me drinking the Kool-Aid, but yes, I admit, I’m one of those people that always clicks on the link when he sees the words “new” and “Toro Y Moi” used in the same sentence, almost regardless of context. The last time this happened, it was with “Leave Everywhere”, the song that I at first didn’t quite “get” but that soon made perfect sense to me, and one that I often found myself getting stuck in my head. And while I don’t think “Still Sound” has that memorable melody that I will be hummingread more and hear the song

Pitt Panthers Football: New Coach Michael Haywood Arrested

If Pitt AD Steve Pederson thought the critics were all over him after the less than spectacular hiring of Michael Haywood as the Panthers next football coach, they will be all over him now after Haywood was arrested on charges of domestic violence in South Bend, Ind., the Associated Press has confirmed.

According to the report, Haywood got into an argument with a woman over custody of their child. As the woman attempted to leave, Haywood allegedly grabbed her by the arm and neck and pushed her. Reportedly, the police report details the woman had red marks on her arm, neck and back.

Haywood has said all the right things since accepting the Panthers job and was starting to look like a good hire.

However, hiring 74-year old Morris Watts as offensive coordinator was not a popular move and there has been the drastic drop of the current Pitt recruiting class that continues to plummet.

Now an arrest before his first official day on the job will have many questioning if Pederson once again dropped the ball when it comes to hiring a football coach.

As this is written, Haywood still sits in a South Bend jail cell, so no statements have been issued.

Like him or not (I didn't), but the man who Haywood replaces- Dave Wannstedt- never got arrested. Neither has the guy that likely should have gotten the job, Dana Holgorsen, who Pederson let fall right into arch-rival West Virginia's hands.

One thing is clear and that's if Haywood remains the Pitt head coach, he has a lot of work to do.

He's not off to a good start.

Nets vs. Bulls: Lack of Three-Point Shooting, Bench Scoring Evident in NJ Loss

The inability for the New Jersey Nets to execute in late game, pressure situations is undoubtedly a huge factor in their rough start, but they are currently being done in by other deficiencies.

Against the Chicago Bulls on New Year's Eve, failure to execute on offense down the stretch certainly led to the 90-81 loss the Nets were handed. There were other glaring holes that contributed to New Jersey's fourth defeat in a row though.

Mainly, these defects are the Nets' absence of three point shooting and scoring from the second unit.

Not having a consistent threat from downtown can easily be attributed to Anthony Morrow's hamstring, which is currently taking longer to heal than expected.

Morrow is statistically one of the best long range shooters in NBA history, and was shooting threes at a rate of 41 percent before going down. The timing of the injury was a shame because he was really starting to stroke it just before he felt a "pop" in his right hammy.

When Sasha Vujacic first came to the Nets it appeared he might be able to fill that void, but he has had difficulty with the deep shots lately, and on Friday was just 2-of-6 on his three point attempts.

Chicago didn't shoot the three at a great percentage, but hit three more of those shots than the Nets did. In a game that was decided by nine points, it can be looked at as the difference.

The Nets are also getting nothing from their bench right now, as New Jersey's reserves shot only 35 percent and scored 18 points against Chicago.

To be fair, the team was only able to dress 10 players as Jordan Farmar needed an MRI on his knee and Troy Murphy suddenly came down with an illness.

The starters also did not play exceptionally well, shooting at 40 percent, but a lot of that, okay most of that, falls on Travis Outlaw, who again struggled.

On the game, Outlaw was 6-of-17 shooting and only made one of six threes. He may be in the starting lineup, but he belongs on the bench.

It's also hard to be too angry with Brook Lopez and Devin Harris (a combined 9-for-24 in the game) given how well they have played lately, particularly Harris.

The two stars also tried to make up for their shooting woes in other ways, as Lopez got to the free throw line 11 times and grabbed eight rebounds while Harris had nine assists. Harris also played very well on defense in holding Derrick Rose, a potential MVP this year, to 5-of-16 shooting.

The bench simply needs to play better and be more selective with their shots.

Johan Petro saw some action due to the injuries and illnesses, and whenever the ball goes to him we all know it's not coming back. He has it in his head that he needs to put it up every time he touches it, which is not helping the team.

Petro is capable of hitting 18-foot jumpers, but just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Chicago's bench (33 percent) did not shoot much better than the Nets' secondary players, yet they scored more points (23). They did this by being more aggressive, as the Bulls' reserves attempted six free throws.

Derrick Favors was the only Nets backup to even attempt one. He had three in total.

To break it all down real quick for you, the combination of the extra three pointers and bench scoring gave Chicago a 41-27 edge in those categories.

It was a nine point game. These two areas are where the contest was decided.

Of course, the 16 Nets turnovers did not help, but they were not as crucial and were an improvement over the team's 20-plus giveaways Wednesday night.

The Nets can't celebrate the new year too hard as they have a game on New Year's Day in Minnesota.

Hopefully for them, 2011 will bring better fortune than 2010 did.

Wise Blood ? Loud Mouths

Let me start out by warning you that this song is definitely not for everyone. If you are afraid of something that is a little out there and a lot different, then you may want to look elsewhere. But if you aren’t afraid to listen to something a little outside of the box, written by a 21 year old from Pittsburgh who just so happens to be a cemetery undertaker by day, then you might want to check out Christopher Laufman aka Wise Blood. “Loud Mouths” starts and ends with a mish mash of various samplesread more and hear the song

Meineke Car Care Bowl: Onside Excitment Part Two

The second onside kickoff is again recovered by Clemson, but was ruled an illegal touch. It was very close to being the Tigers ball, but instead the Bulls will take a knee and get a victory in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.

The Tigers gave it a shot but in the end the Bulls were the better team. The MVP of the games was No. 7 South Florida quarterback B.J. Daniels.

Tyreke Evans' Game-Winner From Beyond Halfcourt Snaps Kings' Losing Streak

The Sacramento Kings may have the worst record in the league, their coach and general manager may be holding onto their jobs by a thread and their best player may be on the verge of sitting for a month or two with injury, but they'll always have this:

Beating the buzzer with a desperate heave from 50 feet away, Tyreke Evans finally gave the tortured fans at ARCO Arena reason to celebrate. The 100-98 win over the Memphis Grizzlies snapped the Kings' eight-game losing streak, and marked just the second win in the last 18 games.

Had Evans missed the last-second prayer, Wednesday's game, a meaningless affair between two last-place teams, would have been quickly forgotten. But by making the shot, Evans provided perhaps the most incredible ending to a game this year -- no matter what the sport.

Kevin Garnett Could Miss Two Weeks With Strained Calf

Kevin GarnettBoston's Kevin Garnett could miss two weeks with a strained right calf -- and that's just fine by GM Danny Ainge.

Garnett missed the entire 2009 playoffs with a right knee injury that eventually required surgery, so Ainge was initially concerned after seeing the All-Star forward limp off the court Wednesday in Detroit. But an MRI performed Thursday confirmed the team's postgame prognosis: Garnett suffered a simple muscle injury that's unrelated to his previous ailment.

"It's a muscle injury, a strained calf," said Ainge in a radio interview with Boston's WEEI. "It's actually the softer side of the leg below the knee. It's not anything to do with his knee, which is great news, and it's one of those injuries that he may be out for a couple of weeks at the most. That's my guess. It's always a guess. I'll just say two weeks. I think that's on the conservative side."

Garnett was hurt when he jumped for a dunk with 2:38 left in the first quarter of a 104-92 loss at the Detroit Pistons. The forward, who is averaging 15.4 points and a team-leading 9.8 rebounds, limped down the court before leaving the game.

As Garnett goes on the shelf, Rajon Rondo could return -- although it's unclear if that will be Friday against the New Orleans Hornets or sometime soon after. Rondo has missed the last six games with a sprained ankle.

"Rajon is getting better," Ainge said. "It was a pretty severe sprain. Rajon is in a situation where he could play, but he's in pain still. He has pain on both sides of the ankle and we just don't want to get him back on to the court until he can play hard."

There's only a thousand Kobe Bryants: London laps up NBA's big star | Paolo Bandini

The LA Lakers No24 drew a full house to the O2 Arena but injury meant he could only play for only six minutes

Tube strikes and traffic jams be damned, Kobe Bryant was coming to London's O2 Arena. Not just one of him, in fact, but thousands, in all shapes and sizes. Tall Kobes, short Kobes, skinny Kobes, fat Kobes, female Kobes and Kobes of all different ethnicities. Some who live just down the road and others who had travelled from the other side of the globe. All meandering up the walkway that leads to the Arena's entrance, stopping to take the odd photograph or gawp at an oversized picture of... Kobe.

This is the fourth consecutive year in which the NBA has hosted a pre-season game in London, but the first in which it has brought its biggest star along for the ride. High profile players have featured ? from Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and a Boston Celtics team gearing up for a championship run in 2007 to Great Britain's own Luol Deng this time last year ? but not the one Britain really wanted to see. "Kobe is, like, the David Beckham of basketball," offered one starry-eyed teen as he queued for the shirt that would transform him, too, into No24.

Except that unlike Becks, Kobe is still at the top of his game. Last year he averaged 29.2 points through the play-offs as he led the Lakers to a second consecutive title and the fifth of his career. He was the top scorer in all but one of seven games against Boston during their finals series. He also happens to earn more than Beckham too, not that there is any animosity over such matters. The pair are close enough that one of Beckham's Milan shirts takes pride of place in Bryant's locker at the Lakers' Staples Center home.

Bryant, of course, was never going to be in championship-winning form for this, the Lakers' first pre-season game, and in the end was restricted to just over six minutes on the court as he sought to protect both a knee that is recovering from summer surgery and a fractured finger that he chose not to have operated on. A sensible decision, perhaps, though still a slightly disappointing one for an audience who did not see him find the basket in that spell.

There could have been some reaction if he had. The crowds at these games in London have always arrived with an enthusiasm verging on boisterousness and this was no different. Cheerleaders were cheered, players roared at and two fans jeered mercilessly after they failed to identify the Neighbours theme tune when summoned to the floor for a time-out challenge.

Nevertheless, there was no disguising the fact that the greatest volume all evening had been achieved when Kobe emerged on to the floor. When he rose for a jump shot two minutes into the contest, hundreds more Kobes rose with him only to crash back to their seats as the ball clanged away off the rim. He would miss two further shots, both from three-point range, before departing.

The notion that he could be back in London soon had already been shot down in a pre-game press conference held by the NBA commissioner, David Stern, and the AEG CEO Tim Leiweke. AEG has close ties with the Lakers, running the Staples Center, while Leiweke is on the team's board of directors, but when asked if LA could become regulars at the O2 (also run by AEG), his response was immediate: "Not gonna happen" as long as Phil Jackson remains coach. Stern was more circumspect, insisting variety would keep things fresh.

There was mercifully little discussion in the same conference of whether the NBA could ever establish a franchise in these parts. The question was raised, but only briefly. It has been posed so often as to become tedious. The response was the same as ever; Stern suggesting the most realistic scenario would see several teams formed at once in Europe to create a new conference before adding that nothing was likely to happen on this front for at least a decade.

The fans were far more concerned with the here and now. The first chants of "We Want Kobe" began late in the third-quarter and there were further appeals throughout the final period. Before the end there was even a smattering of boos. On the bench Bryant grinned, but even with his team trailing, Jackson was unmoved. He is paid to win championships, not pre-season games, and he will need a healthy Bryant if he is to secure a third of those in a row.

And so the Timberwolves won, 111-92, leaving the would-be Kobes in the stands to swallow their disappointment and pack off home. Many will be back for the two regular season games between the New Jersey Nets and Toronto Raptors in March, though it is worth noting that while tickets sold out for tonight's game in "literally a day", according to Leiweke, there is still some availability for those two. A meaningful game, it seems, is less important to fans than a meaningful player.

TUAW TV Live at 5 PM ET: We look back at 2010, make predictions for 2011

For the last TUAW TV Live of the year, I've decided I want to bring in the big guns -- my fellow TUAW bloggers. You get to hear us just about every Sunday night, but you don't often see us in action. I'm going to tempt fate and try to bring Megan Lavey, Mike Schramm, Mike Rose (tentative) and more into a Skype 5 video chat.

What are we going to talk about? The past year, like the biggest Apple stories of 2010, the best products and the worst nightmares. We'll also talk about what we think is coming up in 2011 that will be exciting and new -- will there be a killer product that nobody has thought about? Will the Mac App Store reinvigorate the development world for Mac software?

You can join in as well through the Ustream chat tool. Ask the panelists questions, make comments and discuss our points with other people in the chat room. To join in on this fun and usually educational show, come on back to TUAW just before 5 PM ET (2 PM PT, 10 PM GMT), and you'll find a post containing the live streaming video, the chat room and instructions on how to join in if you're on an iPhone or iPad.

See you later!

Landon Donovan Named US Soccer Athlete of the Year

landon donovan u.s. national teamIt's hard to believe that just six months ago, many were wondering if Landon Donovan would crumble under the pressure of another World Cup.

Instead, he flourished, scoring three goals and leading the U.S. national team to the top spot in a first-round group for the first time in 80 years. For that performance, as well as his leadership on a Los Angeles Galaxy team that won the MLS Supporters Shield, Donovan was named the U.S. Soccer Federation's male athlete of the year on Monday.

Launched in 1984, the award is voted on by fans, journalists and VIPs connected with U.S. Soccer. Donovan also won the honor in 2003, 2004 and 2009. Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Kasey Keller and Donovan were the only men to have won it three times.

Nickey Van Exel, Son of Former NBA Star Nick Van Exel, Charged With Murder

Nickey Van Exel, the 20-year-old son of former NBA great Nick Van Exel, is being held on $1 million bond after being charged with one count of capital murder in Dallas, according to police.

Van Exel is being held on the felony count of murdering Bradley Bassey Eyo, described by police as a close friend.

Paul Johnson, the younger Van Exel's attorney, told The Associated Press that Van Exel and Eyo were allegedly playing with a shotgun at a home in Garland, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, when the gun accidentally fired. Johnson further explained that Van Exel "panicked" and moved the body, dumping it less than a mile away in nearby Lake Ray Hubbard.

Nickey Van Exel turned himself into Dallas police on Wednesday and has admitted to the murder, police said, although he insists it was an accident.

"It's a real sad situation," Johnson said. "Emotions are running high, and, obviously, we recognize that some very bad decisions were made on how he responded."

The senior Van Exel played 13 years in the NBA, appearing in 880 games and starting 670. He averaged 14.4 points and 6.6 assists per game in his career and was known as both a clutch shooter and 3-point specialist. He remains ranked No. 6 in NBA history in 3-point field goals made.

Nick Van Exel played for six different teams in the NBA, most notably the Los Angeles Lakers, as well as the Denver Nuggets, Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors, Portland Trail Blazers and retired after a final season in 2005-06 with the San Antonio Spurs.

Nick Van Exel is in his first year as an assistant coach for the Atlanta Hawks, where he specializes in player development instruction.

No information has been released yet about a hearing date for the younger Van Exel.

New Orleans Hornets: Lakers' Phil Jackson Critical of NBA Ownership

The New Orleans Hornets ownership by the NBA has gained a new enemy in Los Angeles Lakers head coach Phil Jackson. Namely, his largest concern involves any trade of Chris Paul.

He said of the situation: "When Chris says he has to be traded, how?s that going to go? ? Someone?s going to have to make a very nonjudgmental decision on that part that?s not going to irritate anyone else in the league."

He also went beyond that and questioned the feasibility of a team in New Orleans, saying, "?I don?t know if New Orleans can support a team. It hasn?t been successful in supporting a team until now."

Whether his comments will be looked at carefully by others involved in Hornets decision making or the NBA remains to be seen. Until then, it's another person who's not happy with the NBA owning a team and potentially making a move for its own benefit, rather than the team's.

Video: Shaquille O'Neal Reacts to Being Fined $35K for Criticizing Referees

Shaquille O'Neal was fined $35,000 by the league for criticizing officials after he fouled out during Boston's Christmas Day loss to the Magic. Part of O'Neal's remarks specifically targeted referee Bob Delaney (who wears 26 on his jersey), which is obviously a guaranteed fine every single time.

"I guess they (fans) come out to see No. 26 play," O'Neal said. "He was a great player out there today. They paid all that money to see No. 26 come play. My thing is, if you're going to call it, call it the same way every time. Don't pick and choose who you are going to call it against.''

We may think that $35K is chump change to a player of O'Neal's stature, and to be fair it is -- the guy has made in excess of $20 million in salary in each of the past nine seasons. But based on his reaction to the fine -- captured in the following video clip by CSNNE.com -- you wouldn't think that was the case.

All right, maybe that statement is just a tad premature. But based on The Guardian's analysis of readers' player ratings, Holden has been the highest-rated performer throughout the first half of the Premier League campaign, with an average mark of 7.4 out of 10.

Yes, English fans have rated an American as the best player in the world's most popular league.

The 25-year-old has started each of his 16 league appearances for Bolton this season, going the full 90 in all but one contest as Wanderers have made a surprising run to seventh place (6-4-8).

Streaking Miami Heat Hold Off Knicks

MIAMI -- The Miami Heat hosted the New York Knicks on Tuesday night, nearly two weeks after their first matchup at Madison Square Garden and, although the end result was the same, the game was much more competitive this time around. Dwyane Wade exploded for 40 points (the most for a Heat player so far this season) and LeBron James just missed another triple-double as both he and Bosh chipped in 18 points and 10 rebounds. Amar'e Stoudemire led his team with 30 points and seven rebounds in a losing effort.

"We came out to start the game with incredible energy and focus to really set the tone for the game," said Heat coach Erik Spoelstra afterward. "Offensively, they forced us into a game that was a little more stagnant. That's what they do: a lot of switches, a lot of unconventional things defensively. But we got enough plays on both ends down the stretch to pull it out. It was a good win."

Lindsey Vonn: Why She Can't Win with American Sports Fans

Lindsey Vonn captured American fans for one brief, shining moment with that gold medal in the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

She was supposed to be our Golden Girl many times over, but there was just that single gold medal. She was supposed to win five, but a shin injury took care of that.

These days Vonn still competes on the world scene, but at home she's more famous for her cover shot on ESPN The Magazine, posed as Sharon Stone in the hit movie Basic Instinct.

With her Olympic success and good looks, Vonn is still a relative unknown compared to other American athletes. The last time we saw her in the United States was in a Law and Order episode.

Vonn has expressed frustration over her sport's lack of visibility in America, even North America. In non-Olympic years, skiing is invisible—and with invisibility comes less recognition. Vonn won another Super G race this month in Canada, but who knew?

Put her on the cover of ESPN The Magazine, and without reading the print, you'd wonder: Geez, who is THAT?

Vonn still makes about $6 million a year in endorsements. She has 34 World Cup victories but still makes small dollars compared to her tennis counterparts.

It's all about the snow.

After looking around the country so far this winter, it's becoming more and more apparent that Americans hate snow. The NFL hates snow, Philadelphia hates snow and New York certainly has an aversion to the white stuff.

For Vonn, snow has been her way of life, but it hardly makes her one of her country's recognizable athletes, and her sport does not go overboard to market its stars.

Vonn is a downhill star, but her battle for recognition is nothing but an uphill climb.

And that's a shame.

Will this NBA season be a coronation for Miami Heat's three kings?

The arrival of LeBron James and Chris Bosh to a team already boasting Dwyane Wade has raised their championship hopes

The Miami Heat became the most talked-about franchise in basketball in the lead-up to the new NBA season. They tempted "King" LeBron James (frequently regarded as the greatest basketball player in the world) and Chris Bosh (one of the best in the world in his position) from the bleak climbs of Cleveland and Toronto respectively to the scorching warmth of Miami, where they have joined fans favourite Dwyane Wade, who signed a six-year contract extension and is equally regarded as one of the best players in the NBA. These deals are the equivalent of having Pel, Diego Maradona and Johan Cruyff in the same side at their peak. The three were introduced to Heat fans in a typically giant American spectacle, one that seemed more suited to the last night of Glastonbury.

Unsurprisingly, great success is expected of the new-look Heat, with James and Bosh having the added incentive to triumph as they are yet to win a championship, with Wade having won only one, back in 2006. But as hope rises in Miami, expectations tumble in Cleveland where following the departure James, the home team are not expected to even reach the play-offs. The Cavaliers had been trying to build a championship-winning team around LeBron since they drafted him into the side as the No1 pick in 2003, but now there will have to be a major re-think regarding tactics and strategy. However, it is hard not to feel a degree of sympathy for James, who was understandably frustrated being regarded as the best player in the NBA but with only one play-off finals appearance to his name ? a 4-0 defeat against the San Antonio Spurs in 2007. Surely he had the right to search for glory after so many disappointing seasons in Ohio?

James's move has upset not only the people of Cleveland, but fans of teams across the league. That was evident on Tuesday night as the Heat kicked-off their season at a sold-out TD Garden in Boston, where the Celtic crowd proceeded to boo the 25-year-old every time he touched the ball. The Heat went on to lose the game 88-80.

As James said himself during pre-season, it may take until January before the team fully gels which is perhaps understandable. Therefore, the fact James and co were less than convincing in Boston is no major shock. Also, it is easy to forget the Heat were up against last season's play-off runners-up, who were only beaten by the LA Lakers in the final game of the finals.

The Celtics are in some ways the opposite to the Heat: they have experience of winning championships and a team in which each player knows his role, and it was this which proved the difference on Tuesday. Miami were particularly poor in the first half, with their "Three Kings" looking more like three peasants, managing between them just 10 turnovers in the entire game.

However, for all the mistakes and disappointments of the three men most people were watching, it is easy to forget how good the Celtics were. Their defence was solid and in Rajon Rondo the hosts had the man who created the third highest number of assists on the opening day of any NBA season.

James, though, still shone and almost brought the Heat back into the game single-handedly in the third quarter as what was a 19-point lead for the Celtics was eventually reduced to three as he went on to finish with 31 points.

The Celtics followed victory over Miami with a surprise 95-87 loss against the Cavaliers 24 hours later. But despite the defeat, Doc Rivers's men are likely to remain a force to be reckoned with throughout this season. Last season's runners-up have added to their already impressive squad with one of the biggest names in sport; the larger-than-life centre Shaquille O'Neal, who also decided to leave Cleveland. Shaq may be reaching the end of his career ? or as he calculated in his first press conference, his "final 730 days" ? but he remains a force to be reckoned with.

With the high expectations surrounding Miami and Boston it is easy to overlook other contenders in the Eastern Conference, such as the Orlando Magic, last season's conference runners-up who boast probably the best centre in the league in Dwight Howard, who, like James and Bosh, has found a championship ring elusive. Also, New York will be hoping for a big season after signing offensive powerhouse Amar'e Stoudemire, a player Knicks fans will hope can push their team into the play-offs for the first time since the 2003-04 season.

Kobe Bryant's LA Lakers, meanwhile, have returned from their excursion to London for the European tour earlier this month and as usual will be expected to lead the running in the Western Conference. They have made few acquisitions over the summer, although having won back-to-back championships they may see no need to tinker with a winning formula. Bryant's play-off success has been somewhat overshadowed by James and his summer move, although with yet another championship ring under his belt, the 32-year-old has further cemented his legacy.

There will be much interest in how Oklahoma City Thunder begin the season as much is expected of the explosive young forward Kevin Durant, whom many pundits consider to be a strong challenger for James's MVP title in the coming years. Little was expected of the Thunder at the beginning of last season yet surprisingly they flourished under the direction of Coach of the Year Scott Brooks off the court and Durant, the NBA's Scoring Champion, on it.

Interest will follow the Washington Wizards as observers caste an eye over how the No1 draft pick John Wall performs under the NBA spotlight, especially after performing well during pre-season. Gilbert Arenas also returns to the side on 27 January after serving his ban for firearms offences. Whether he is still a fan favourite is yet to be seen, but either way Wizards fans will expect a great deal from him this year.

Interest in the new NBA season is, then, enormous. Miami remain favourites to lift the play-off trophy next summer but any of the teams that reach the play-offs are likely to pose a serious threat to the Heat.

<lyrics>

You and everyone you know
You all think and act the same
You may call that perfectly normal
But I don't think that's perfectly sane
I must be so out of touch
'Cause I can't relate
I wish someone could explain to me

What's so great?
What's so great about normal
Normal thinking
What's so great?
What's so great about you?

Your politicians are pop stars
Your heroes actors from T.V.
Your sex symbols are all sixteen
It doesn't make any sense to me
You say there's something wrong with me
'Cause I can't relate
But it's not my fault that I can't see

What's so great?
What's so great about normal
Normal thinking
What's so great?
What's so great about you?

So now you're trying to tell me
This is what you call feeling fine
Well I think there's something wrong
With your normal mind
You kill yourself with awful food
An awful job and an awful day-to-day
That's called perfectly normal?
I'd rather be called insane

Because there's nothing great
Nothing great about normal, normal thinking
There's nothing great
Nothing great about normal, normal thinking
And there's nothing great about you

TUAW's Daily App: Burn the Rope

This isn't an iOS port of the great Flash game You Have To Burn the Rope, though an upgraded version of that would be nice to have. Instead, this one is a pretty inventive puzzle title by a company called Big Blue Bubble. The idea is that you touch anywhere along a rope to start up a flame, and then you have to keep that flame burning by tilting your iPhone so that the fire always burns up.

It works really well as a physics puzzle game, and each level has certain percentage goals of the rope to burn (and later there are enemies to burn through as well), and whenever your flame splits off at different intersections, you need to watch each side of the flame and make sure it has vertical room to grow. Getting through the levels is not that hard, but burning everything on the screen is both challenging and fun (when you can actually do it). It's a really inventive game. Something only possible on the iPhone, it takes a nice different angle and just iterates on it, similar to popular games like Angry Birds and Cut the Rope.

That iteration lasts over 80 levels, and the developers promise even more to come. There's no Game Center integration, unfortunately, but there is a silly theme song, and all of those levels make for quite a bit of game. As of this writing, the game is on sale for a buck, but I think it's worth it even for a few bucks. It's too bad there's no lite version to try out, because the concept really is original. But if you like puzzlers like Cut the Rope and Zen Bound, this one will probably scratch that same itch.

$600k a week iPad-controlled charter yacht

First land, then air, and now sea -- the $600,000 per week charter superyacht, called "Solemates," is also controlled by Apple's iPad device. When you rent the boat and step onboard, the captain hands you an iPad with a custom-made app that allows you to control the lights and climate systems on the boat, control entertainment systems, and even summon crew members while onboard. Pretty snazzy, though of course it's far from cheap -- anyone with enough money to spare to rent this boat probably doesn't have any issue picking up an iPad anyway.

Of course the iPad isn't the only amenity on the craft -- a wood interior fills up with natural light, and has spaces for dining and partying, and there's a sun deck on top with a jacuzzi for relaxing in when you're not staying in one of the cabin spaces for 12 guests. Quite a boat to be on, indeed.

Inter Milan Defeats TP Mazembe, Claims FIFA Club World Cup

inter milan fifa club world cup samuel eto'oIts roster aging, its coach under fire and its domestic dominance on the wane, Inter Milan seized its golden opportunity on Saturday and defeated overmatched Congolese side TP Mazembe. 3-0, in the FIFA Club World Cup Final.

The trophy capped an historic year for the Italian club, which captured a fifth consecutive Serie A crown, the Italian Cup and its first European Cup in 45 years last spring.

Led by Portuguese mastermind José Mourinho, Inter was a veteran team that had matured and reached its zenith in a comfortable win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League Final.

Mourinho moved onto Real Madrid, and replacement Rafael Benítez has been unable to prevent Inter's slide from the summit. The Nerazzurri lost to Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup and have opened the Italian season 6-4-5, good for seventh place in Serie A. It entered the Club World Cup winners of just two if its past nine matches in all competitions.
