US Coach Bob Bradley Begins Building National Team Foundation Against Chile

us chile usa chile u.s. national team soccer juan agudelo teal bunburyCARSON, Calif. -- For the casual fan of the U.S. national team, Saturday's match against Chile probably seemed a bit unusual. Where was Landon Donovan? Why wasn't the game on English-language TV? Who the heck is Mikkel Diskerud, and why is everyone calling him "Mixx?"

The simple answers to these questions are that Landon Donovan is in Los Angeles preparing for the upcoming MLS season.

The game wasn't on television because ESPN is contracted to show a certain number of matches annually and this one wasn't selected.

And Mikkel Diskerud is a promising 20-year-old midfielder from Oslo whose American mother (hence his U.S. passport) nicknamed him "Mixx" when he was a child.

The reason for all of this confusion? The game against Chile was basically a scrimmage -- the international soccer equivalent of a JV game. Which is why Landon Donovan was given the night off. And why ESPN chose not to air the game. And why Diskerud got the start instead of Michael Bradley or Clint Dempsey or Stuart Holden.

Shaun White Wins Fourth Straight Winter X Games Superpipe Title

Filed under:

Shaun WhiteASPEN, Colo. (AP) -- Shaun White captured his fourth straight superpipe crown at the Winter X Games, holding off Scotty Lago by performing his signature trick, a difficult and dangerous maneuver only few can do.

White, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, cemented the win on his second run Sunday night, pulling out the Double McTwist 1260 in which he launches himself high above the pipe, then does two head-over-heels flips and 3 1/2 rotations.

That was good enough to overtake Lago, who led after the first run despite competing with a broken jaw. Louie Vito was third.

All three were members of the Olympic snowboarding team in Vancouver, with White winning gold and Lago winding up with bronze.

White was looking quite stylish, wearing a black leather jacket and skin-tight pants. His snowboarding was just as cutting edge as White demonstrated why he's the undisputed king of the pipe, even if he was battling a cold.

Before Sunday, White never really had to pull out the McTwist to come from behind and secure a win.

Usually, he's only brought it out for victory laps.

But the trick was spot-on when he needed it most.

Omar Gonzalez, Juan Agudelo Among U.S. Players to Watch Against Chile

It's all-too easy to get caught up in the post-World Cup hangover. When the words "four-year cycle" are thrown around, the slow climb toward Brazil 2014 can feel like an eternity.

But this summer's CONCACAF Gold Cup is a crucial event. Although the regional tournament is a biennial affair, many countries send their best personnel only to the edition that occurs the year after the World Cup, when a berth in the next Confederations Cup is at stake.

The very youthful pool of players summoned to Carson, Calif., by U.S. coach Bob Bradley ahead of Saturday's friendly against Chile (10 p.m. ET, TeleFutura) clearly indicates that he has one eye on the more-distant future. But Bradley surely will be using the other to evaluate certain players for his 23-man Gold Cup roster.

Chip Ganassi Makes More History With Victory in Rolex 24 at Daytona

Filed under:

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Sure, Chip Ganassi's driver lineup looked unbeatable: three Indy 500 champions, a Daytona 500 winner and the reigning sports car season champs. But in the always grueling, unpredictable and increasingly wild and woolly Rolex 24 at Daytona, it takes more than talent. It takes luck, preparation and in Sunday's case, great tenacity to win.

Reigning Grand-Am Series champ Scott Pruett took the lead from his Chip Ganassi Racing teammate, 2008 Indy 500 champ Scott Dixon, with 45 minutes left in the twice-around-the-clock race on the 3.56-mile Daytona International Speedway road course, then held him off on a re-start with one lap to go to give Ganassi his fourth Rolex 24 win in the last six years.

Ganassi is the first owner in racing history to simultaneously own the Daytona 500, Indianapolis 500, Brickyard 400 and Rolex 24 trophies -- something people are already affectionately calling the "Chip Slam.''

"I don't drive the cars, I don't change the tires and I don't work on the engines,'' Ganassi said, modestly acknowledging the accomplishment. "I'm just the guy that gets to stand up here and talk about it. It's a lot of other guys that do the hard work.

"A win here does not reward you at the next race. We had a great day today and tomorrow we're on to the next race.''

The first four finishers were separated by less than four seconds after 24 hours of what was one of the most competitive races in the event's 49-year history. It was the fourth overall and ninth class win for Pruett, who co-drove with Memo Rojas, second-generation IndyCar driver Graham Rahal and sports car veteran Joey Hand.

"We were very optimistic, but did we know we'd win? No,'' Pruett said about his last stint in the car after chasing his teammates for much of the race. "But Joey (Hand) did a great job making up time. We knew we had a strong car and were just looking at our options.''

NFL Labor Dispute: Cromartie's Heart In Right Place, Should Have Foot In Mouth

Well, that didn't take long.

The New York Jets, who just suffered a defeat in the AFC Championship game for the second year in a row, left Pittsburgh and went quietly into the night. One would think, with no more upcoming games to play, there would be nothing left to say.

Not a chance. The Jets, with their large crop of colorful characters, have found their way back into the spotlight this week.

In this week's game of media controversy roulette, the ball dropped onto cornerback/kick return/baby-making specialist Antonio Cromartie, who decided to take it upon himself to send a message to the NFLPA and ownership. For lack of worse words, stop being a bunch of sticks in the mud and get to the bottom of this.

I could not agree with him more.

But where Cromartie fails is his approach. He is certainly right, from everybody’s perspective, from the owners and players and on down to the fans, that they want a deal in place by March. Everybody feels this way.

There isn't anybody out there with a vested interest in this that doesn’t want to see football being played come fall. In the first game of the season, the Vikings and Saints all stood on the field before the game as a symbolization of the unified front they have towards the upcoming labor dispute.

But here we are at the end of the season, and you are seeing some of that solidarity beginning to wilt away. Cromartie’s comments stink of desperation. It’s a blinking contest, and the owners are more than willing to wait, maybe past the last second for the player’s union to concede, “we just want to play, we just want to get paid, we just want a deal done”.

This isn't even the last second. Five weeks left, and one bird has already chirped to the media about something that other players have to be feeling too. That even though they don’t want their salary cut by one-fifth, and they don’t want to play 18 games, and believe me, no player in their right mind does, they will accept the terms handed to them to keep getting paid.

Cromartie going to the media was a mistake. It showed the players' vulnerability. Somewhere, every owner reading Cromarties statement or seeing it on TV was grinning from ear to ear, “so that's what these guys are thinking?”

Watching the players jaw back and forth through the media and twitter was also a nice comedy side reel for the owners to laugh at.

If Antonio Cromartie knew how unions work, then he would know that squabbling and in-fighting between members is a sign of weakness, and increases the ownership’s bargaining power. It will be much more difficult to move them on important issues if the owners are under the impression that most of the players attitude towards this situation is similar to Cromartie's.

DeMaurice Smith knows this. Ray Lewis knows this, too. Ray is right, that IS why they have leaders. Each and every player supports the same cause, but Smith is the man they hired to speak for them collectively. The leaders of the union were put there for their expertise in this matter.

I have read bloggers calling Cromartie “the voice of reason”. That's a load of crap. He’s nothing but the voice of reason for every single player in the NFL to be upset with him. Even if it’s only one player, he’s shown his cards—just get a deal done. The owners will certainly play off that sentiment at crunch time.

There is probably a ratio of players in the league that, depending on their financial situation, could afford to sit out a year, and then there’s some that would probably play no matter what.

Regardless of who is who, being critical of the union that represents you through the media and exposing it to everyone else is a bad idea. It shows a chink in the union’s proverbial armor...and a cracked union is tantamount to no union at all.

Rudy Gay leaves it late as Memphis Grizzlies defeat Miami Heat

? Gay lands buzzer-beater to end Memphis's losing streak
? Toronto Raptors land Peja Stojakovic in five-man trade

Rudy Gay landed a 15-foot buzzer-beater over LeBron James to end the Memphis Grizzlies' five-game losing streak with a 97-95 win over Miami Heat on Saturday.

Zach Randolph led the Grizzlies (5-9) with 21 points and 13 rebounds, Mike Conley had 16 points and Gay added 15 as Memphis snapped the Heat's three-game winning streak.

"This was the most unified we've been," said Grizzlies head coach Lionel Hollins. "That's how you win tough, close games, everybody rooting for each other, everybody picking each other up."

It was a tight contest throughout with the teams trading the lead constantly in a back-and-forth second half.

"That's a tough loss," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We just could not find a way to get over the hump."

James and Chris Bosh carried the Heat (8-5) in the absence of Dwyane Wade, who did not play due to a left wrist injury. James scored a game high 29 points and added 11 assists while Bosh scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds.

Eddie House came off the bench to score 20 points, including six three-pointers, but there was more bad news for the Heat when the forward Udonis Haslem collided with Randolph late in the third quarter and was carried off the court.

"It's huge," James said of Haslem's injury. "He's like our heart of our team. He's our power. He's our pride. He brings everything every night. Size never really matters to him. He always plays above his height, plays above his weight."

The New Orleans Hornets and the Toronto Raptors completed a five-player trade featuring the former All Star Peja Stojakovic on Saturday.

The Hornets acquired the point guard Jarrett Jack, Australian center David Andersen and guard Marcus Banks from the Raptors in exchange for the guard Jerryd Bayless and Stojakovic as well as cash considerations.

"We are excited about the players acquired today and feel that our short-term and long-term goals will benefit from this move," said the Hornets general manager Dell Demps.

"Peja has been a valued contributor as a Hornet for years and we wish both Peja and Jerryd all the best in their future and thank them for their recent contributions in helping us get off to a strong start."

Stojakovic is in his 13th season in the NBA, averaging double figures in scoring in all but one season with a career best of 24.2 points a game in 2003-04 when he was selected as a second-team All-Star. In six games this season he has averaged 7.5 points.

Average iPhone owner has 108 apps, spends 84 minutes a day using them

A survey of the 1,000 iOS devices that synchronize with Appsfire's mobile app discovery and sharing platform reveal some interesting statistics about app usage by its iOS owners. Summarized in an infographic, the compiled statistics show that most of its iOS users prefer native apps to web apps.

The average user spends 84 minutes a day using on-device applications and a mere ten minutes on the web using web-based applications. Each iOS owner has, on average, 108 applications installed on their device. Of these applications, 20 are shipped with the operating system and 88 are installed from the App Store.

Breaking it down even further, Appsfire suggests that 58% of installed applications are free, 23% are paid and 19% are the default apps on the handset. Of these apps, the average Appsfire user spends 10% of their time on telephony and 47% of their time using other apps like Angry Birds, Instagram and more.

While the results are compelling, they represent a subset of users who are focused on finding and using applications. Take a look at the infographic after the break and let us know in the comments if you fit into this profile.

New York Mets Sign R.A. Dickey To 2-Year Deal

The Mets have skipped arbitration with starting pitcher R.A. Dickey, and both sides have agreed to a two-year, $7.5 million deal.

This is a move that I advocated for earlier this year, and I feel that the Mets made a good decision. It was included as one of my top 10 moves that Sandy Alderson should consider for this offseason.

Dickey had an outstanding year last season. His 2.84 ERA was seventh best in the National League. His 11 wins last season were also tied him with Johan Santana for the second most on the Mets.

This was by far the best season that Dickey has had as a professional.

However, there are some reasons for concern. Dickey has never had a season before this where he had an ERA under 4.62. Also, for his career, Dickey has a 4.70 ERA.

Dickey also threw 56 2/3 more innings this season, at age 35, than he had in any other season in his career. He has never had this much wear and tear on his arm. However, as a knuckleballer, Dickey is able to have a larger increase in innings pitched than most other pitchers.

Knuckleballers tend to first have success at an older age then traditional pitchers, so this bodes well for Dickey. Tim Wakefield did not have consistent success until he turned 34 years old. Phil Niekro also had some of his best years in this 30s. There is no reason to believe that Dickey cannot do this as well.

Even if Dickey begins to regress back to his career averages, it is still a good deal for the Mets. According to FanGraphs, Dickey was worth $13.9 million to the Mets. Dickey only received a $400,000 salary last season. Dickey has already earned this deal.

For more Mets news check out Mets Gazette and Mr. Mets' Daily.

The Besnard Lakes @ The Magic Stick 1.12.11

There are so many overwhelmingly positive thoughts in my head about The Besnard Lakes right now that I don’t even know how to begin. It’s been a few years now that I’ve been completely enamored by this band’s one of a kind sound. A sound that sounds so vintage and genuine. A sound that generally starts out pretty slowly and quietly but almost always builds up into a rock ballad of epic proportions. And I knew that finally seeing them live would be a one of a kind experience.

I spit on behalf of my death cult made of millions of morbid angels
Standing in a burning church in Norway lost in hatred
Of course Satan smiles through the face of a child
Whose born with the number of the Devil scraped into his scalp
We don?t like none of y?all at all
My fuck your mother in the mouth type of dawgs might write this song
Triple X bitches call me and invite me home
They run up on me on the street in then invite me dome
I spit the truth for the youth movement, it?s goon music
Engineered to make you bang your motherfucking head to it
Learn ships, live fast lives and spit flames then burn bitches with crackpipes like Rick James
Ill Bill, I?m from Brooklyn where the stars are born
I make drug music plus I be involved in porn
I be the chosen like Robby Benson beyond comprehension
Holding a toaster like Bronson in Death Wish

[Chorus x 2]

Black metal, I cock back react thorough
In la botanica con el santero
Black mask, white robe, shrouded in peril
Trapped me in the war between God and the Devil

[Verse 2: Sick Jacken]

I know a babalawo who cuts chicken heads
I fuck chicken heads man that Santeria shit is fucking wild
I?m feeling like my time running out
I?m the middle of the block guns drawn when they gun it down
I break speed limits on the highway to Hell
They got the Devil chasing me trying to give me life without bail
I drink spirits and smoke form for medicine
And inhale elements of sickle cell
You can catch me in the hood like VD
That Sixth Side Street shit homes and we ain?t deal with the PD
The most hated on the block with no greatest
Crash through the storm and attack the storm raiders
I shoot the shit with Shaman, my spirit is still starving
Imagine all the shit that my soul famine is causing
Knife-carving nine on the psychos at night swarming
I fight to be righteous but the murder is more calm

[Chorus x 2]

[Verse 3: Q-Unique]

I been forced to fulfill a dark and hateful agarro
And was born the son of a Satan santero
Burn black candles for a black Sabbath
After the fact the priest converted her to a crack addict
It?s flat madness with black gats and black magic
Sit and watch the death of faces and laugh at it
With two white pale goth bitches lost in an orgy
And you too could subscribe for the cost of a forty
I got the blood of the faceless pagans on me
A sacred place praying to raise a Haitians army
The Babalawo wolf from Brooklyn in all white
White fitted, white Nikes, moving that pure white all night
Make a bruha scream chango and fuck their brains out
Your ice crucifix won?t save you, tuck your chains now
Between Heaven and Hell, pa? arriba y pa? abajo
Knowing the Devil itself itself vamos pa?l carajo

<lyrics>

My baby cares for the animals
She loves everyone
She sheds a tear for the monkey
and the ants when they get trampled on

I like you the best
I like you the best
I like you the best

Yes i do
Yes i do

My baby cares for the zebras
She digs every stripe
Take me down to the zoo to see the babel
I don't know how to say what I've been thinking of

But i like you the best
I like you the best
I like you the best

Yes i do
Yes i do

Ff you love me
Don't eat me
If you want me
Be sweet
If you want me
Don't eat me

My baby sleeps in a lemon patch
She flies in a rocket ship
She can breathe underwater
She's a funny kid

I like you the best
I like you the best
I like you the best

If you love me
Don't eat me
If you want me
Be sweet
If you love me
Don't eat me

I like you the best
I like you the best
I like you the best

Yes i do

13 reasons why software is not free

When Steve Jobs announced the App Store, he made it clear that Apple would be happy to take on the costs of hosting and distributing free apps. I remember thinking at the time that he actually seemed to be pushing the idea of free apps.

Free apps helped launch the iOS App Store into having stratospheric numbers of available apps, and probably pushed down the overall price of many other apps as well. But there's no such thing as a free lunch, even in the App Store(s). Apps take time and skill to be developed, and one of the unfortunate side-effects of the App Store pricing is that many people now expect apps to be free or low-priced. When I was using Palm software on my Treo, I regularly paid $10-$20 for apps, including games. With very few exceptions, most iOS apps are priced well below that.

This is good for everyone, right? Apple gets to boast about a huge number of available titles, users get access to an incredible library of inexpensive software literally at their fingertips, and developers get... um... developers get... noticed? A fleeting chance for fame? The hope that they might have the "winning the lottery"-type luck of an app like Angry Birds and sell millions of copies of their $1 app?

Morning Parade ? Under the Stars (Get People Remix)

Essex fivesome (because fivesome is an infinitely better word than quintet) Morning Parade has just recently released their first single “Under the Stars”. And by recently, I mean approximately a month and a half ago. And London electronic outfit Get People has done a might fine job in the remix department with this song. I feel as though it is a smooth jam with just enough of a beat to not overpower anything but still keep things moving forward. I figured this might be a nice interlude as my musical tastes have moved towards some otherread more and hear the song

NHL All-Star Game 2011: Why Lidstrom Has the Better Team

So, last night was the All-Star game fantasy draft to determine which team each player would be on. And I'm going to admit I was pretty excited watching the captains make their selections. This new format is a great idea.

Even prior to the draft, I knew I'd be rooting for Team Lidstrom, but I was really curious would who draft the better team. As I watched it all unfold, pick after pick, I came to realize Lidstrom clearly had the better team. In fact, I knew after Round 6 of the draft.

Without getting too serious about it, I think Lidstrom did have some kind of strategy going into it. Yes, he had the advantage of not having to please the home crowd like Staal did, and even though Staal got the first picks, it seemed like Lidstrom was the one who put together a better team and really determined the direction of the draft.

In this slide show, I will prove why Nicklas Lidstrom selected a much better team than Eric Staal in the All-Star Draft.

MLS SuperDraft Winners and Losers

mls draftThe coverage, analysis and forecasting ahead of the MLS SuperDraft may increase with every passing year, but as Thursday's proceedings in Baltimore so-clearly illustrated, the event is as unpredictable as ever.

While the experts debated whether University of Akron's Darlington Nagbe or Perry Kitchen would be the first overall pick, the Vancouver Whitecaps were heading in a completely different direction.

With the top selection, Vancouver chose striker Omar Salgado, a raw 17-year-old striker with enticing skills and physical tools who may not even be eligible until September. Nagbe and Kitchen may be considered can't-miss talents, but the Whitecaps had no qualms about passing them over in favor of an uncertain long-term project.

Trade to Eastern Conference Could Cost Carmelo Anthony All-Star Start

Carmelo AnthonyCarmelo Anthony was named Thursday to start the NBA All-Star Game.

Maybe he will.

If the forward were to be traded before the Feb. 20 All-Star Game in Los Angeles from the Denver Nuggets of the Western Conference to a team in the Eastern Conference, he instead would be placed on the East roster for the game. If all five East starters are healthy and ready to go, it would mean Anthony coming off the bench.

It also could mean the East having 13 players on its roster if Anthony were to be traded to the East after the reserves are announced next Thursday and all players are healthy and ready to play. The West roster could be down to 11 players but could be restored to 12 with a replacement named for Anthony.

An NBA official confirmed the scenarios with FanHouse when information was requested on how any player in the exact situation as Anthony would be handled by the league.

Final Xserve orders won't reach customers for two months

With the Xserve's end of life arriving in just three days, the Apple Store is listing both the Quad-Core and 8-Core Xserves as shipping in April. So, if you've been wondering whether or not to pull the trigger on an Xserve purchase, now is the time to do so.

160 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB drive modules will still be available until the end of the year. All three of these modules are shipping within a 24-hour period. For more guidance, check out Apple's transition document. Potential customers are being urged to consider the Mac mini server or Mac Pro with Snow Leopard Server instead of Xserve.

[Giveaway] Deadmau5/Ultra Records Prize Pack!

CONTEST IS CLOSED. THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO ENTERED!

Make no mistake about it, regardless of the music we’ve been posting lately, we love a crazy, sweaty electronic dance party just as much as the next guy (if not more), and nobody seems to guarantee a great night like this better than Deadmau5. In fact, I couldn’t even bring myself to go to his last show in the area because it was on a Monday, and I typically require approximately 2 days to recover from a Deadmau5 show. Point is, Joel Zimmerman knows how to bring it. And with thatread more and hear the song

Philadelphia Union's Partnership With Bimbo About More Than Just a Name

philadelphia union bimboThe Sept. 1 friendly between the Philadelphia Union and Mexican power Chivas de Guadalajara at PPL park wasn't just your average American soccer marketing ploy.

It turns out the game was as much about fishing for dollars with the large logo on the front of the opponent's famous red-and-white jersey as it was about fishing for fans with the small badge toward the top.

That big logo, of course, reads "Bimbo." To Americans, it's an amusing and relatively misogynistic insult. But to everyone south of the 2-0 parallel, it's just a loaf of bread.

Soccer is the global game, and as such, it's played in many different languages. Sometimes certain subtleties can get lost in translation. On Tuesday, the Union announced an ambitious sponsorship deal that's going to test those boundaries. Bimbo, the baked good conglomerate pronounced "Beembo," will pay a reported $12 million over four years to be the Union's presenting/jersey sponsor.

Union CEO Nick Sakiewicz told FanHouse that the Chivas friendly "was somewhat tactical because we were in conversations with Bimbo at the time."
