Duel of Aces Doesn't Materialize as Misfit Giants Carry the Day in Philadelphia

Filed under:

PHILADELPHIA -- So no jersey or game ball will be making its way to Cooperstown. Doc didn't throw another gem, and the Freak failed to make your jaw hit the floor. It wasn't quite the pitching duel we so eagerly awaited, not that anyone who inhales baseball this time of year should be complaining.

In the end, it was the Beard who captivated, mesmerized and, finally, sucked the air right out of a manic Citizens Bank Park. San Francisco closer Brian Wilson goes by the nickname "B-Weezy" and never mind why. Cody Ross, the Giants No. 8 hitter with the number 13 on his back, dreamed of being a rodeo clown when he was a kid. They're just two of the Giants' unique cast of characters - "misfits and miscasts" their manager lovingly calls them - and on Saturday night they managed to steal large slivers of the spotlight from the pair of aces who had been so breathlessly hyped.

"We thought it would be a close game, which it was. It's a long series here. And it's a start. And that's all it is right now," manager Bruce Bochy said after his Giants slipped away with a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series.

LeBron James accused of 'shameful display of selfishness' by Cavaliers

? LeBron James called 'self-titled former King' after Miami move
? Majority owner says Cleveland will win NBA title before James

The owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers has called LeBron James selfish for his decision to seek a championship with the Miami Heat and promised the hard-luck city an NBA title before the six-times All-Star gets one.

In a letter to Cavaliers fans, the team's majority owner, Dan Gilbert, said he was disappointed that James opted to join his fellow All-Stars Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami and felt the nationally televised announcement was inappropriate.

"If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our 'motivation' to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels," Gilbert wrote.

"I personally guarantee that the Cleveland Cavaliers will win an NBA championship before the self-titled former 'King' wins one ... you can take it to the bank."

James opted to deliver his decision during an hour-long programme on cable network after weeks of speculation on whether he would stick with his hometown Cavaliers or jump to one of the other five teams who courted his services.

His decision dealt a major blow to a city that has not celebrated a professional sports championship since 1964 and has developed a widely known reputation for failing in key games.

Without James on the payroll, the Cavaliers can now look to bolster their roster by signing players from what is regarded as one of the deepest pools of free agents. "I promise you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only: delivering you the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue," wrote Gilbert.

The Heat, who last celebrated an NBA title in 2006, were clearly in a much more upbeat mood as the team usher in a new chapter.

"We are thrilled that LeBron James and Chris Bosh have decided to come to Miami to join forces with our truly great player, Dwyane Wade," the Heat coach, Pat Riley, said in a statement.

"We are looking forward to the opportunity of building something that our fans in Miami will be proud of for a long, long time. The journey is just beginning."

FSU Escapes Boston College: Will the Real Christian Ponder Please Stand Up?

Nineteen of 31 for 170 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions including a fumble—those don't exactly sound like Heisman statistics, do they?

Those were the numbers that Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder put up against Boston College on Saturday in a hard-fought but easily avoidable 24-19 win. The win extends the 'Noles' winning streak to five games; but in a home game they were picked to win by 28 points, they certainly failed to impress.

Ponder never fully found his rhythm, but it wasn't all his fault. Countless times the offensive drives resulted in three straight pass plays with plenty of three-and-out series. FSU's rushing attack came into the contest ranked 16th in the country, averaging 223 yards a game. Saturday's game against Boston College resulted in only 141 yards of total rushing, almost half the season average. The play-calling was questionable to say the least, but that's not to take credit away from Boston College's defense.

Jermaine Thomas and Chris Thompson never found their stride, while the only rushing touchdown of the day was a reverse to wide receiver Bert Reed for 42 yards to seal the victory. Wide receiver Rodney Smith hauled in six catches for 49 yards, and Taiwan Easterling had three catches for 42 yards.

Florida State's defense struggled early in the game. Boston College running back Montel Harris ripped through the Seminole defense for a staggering 191 yards on 26 carries, but he failed to find the end zone. True freshman Chase Rettig struggled all day, completing just nine passes on 24 attempts for 95 yards.

Brandon Jenkins accounted for two sacks, while Jaccobi McDaniel and Markus White each had a sack of their own. The defensive line started out shaky, but found their groove and in the second half shut down Boston College's offensive attack. Safety Terrance Parks had a couple of huge pass break-ups as did true freshman LaMarcus Joyner.

The win begs the question: Is this team for real?

The old saying, "a  win is a win" just doesn't have the same meaning for this one. Florida State dominated Miami last week, so they possibly could have had a hangover from the big game.

At the same time, though, we have to look at the play of Christian Ponder. We've been waiting all season for him to break out of his shell and play the way he did a year ago, but it just hasn't happened yet. There's no time line on when he will start to play better, but if FSU wants the magic to continue, he will need to step up and perform the way he is capable of and the way Florida State fans are used to seeing him play.

Foxconn parent company raising prices for Apple, others

This is the downside of being Apple -- just as they get prices and costs to where they want them, those same prices and costs tend to go up again. Foxconn's parent company Hon Hai has reported that it will raise its manufacturing prices in China, directly affecting Apple's and other companies' costs over there. The company is reportedly trying to push profits up for the last quarter of this year, and aims to raise sales by as much as 30% next year.

Of course, this probably isn't a surprise for Apple -- given how closely the company researches and follows component costs, this is likely something already baked in to their strategy (and even if it's not, $40 billion in cash tends to help out with unseen charges). But it's a clear reminder that costs aren't fixed for these devices at all -- just because Apple secures pricing on one processor or screen doesn't mean they'll have that same opportunity next year. It shows you a little bit of just how difficult it is to do what Apple has done, and coordinate all of these parts and companies to make a great product at a salable price.

Syracuse Greats Reunite at Carrier Dome to Honor Jim Boeheim

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The ceremony was brief, but emotional, not only for the 11,747 in attendance at the Carrier Dome Friday night, but for the dozen or so men embracing at courtside.

Technically, the presentation at halftime of the Detroit Pistons-Minnesota Timberwolves NBA exhibition game was to present Syracuse men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim with another coach-of-the-year award for last year's milestone accomplishments. But that was dwarfed by the return to campus of at least a dozen of his former players from his 34 seasons as head coach -- and one former roommate, Dave Bing.

Is Les Miles Ever Going To Resolve LSU's Quarterback Situation?

It seems like LSU head coach Les Miles is the only person in America that is not watching the Tiger offense struggle every time Jordan Jefferson takes a snap and moves when Jarrett Lee is under center.

The Mad Hatter may be trying not to show his cards before LSU enters the heart of its conference schedule or he may just be stubborn. Either way he needs to get the quarterback situation figured out soon or the Tigers have no chance of competing against conference opponents like Auburn, Alabama or Arkansas.

It is pretty obvious that every time Jefferson is under center, the offensive production is lacking and when Lee leads the offense the chains are moved on a fairly consistent basis.

It does not take an SEC caliber coach to know that if one quarterback moves the chains and the other does not, you go with the one that does.  However, Miles seems almost indebted to Jefferson and his refusal to sit the underachieving quarterback could be the demise of the coach’s career at LSU and worse for Tiger fans, could be the cause of LSU not reaching the BCS national championship.

LSU definitely has the talent to go undefeated, win the SEC championship and play for the BCS title this season.  It’s the poor coaching and bad decisions that could prevent this from happening.

Lee led the LSU offense on all of their touchdown-scoring drives and yet still Miles plays Jefferson even through the struggles.

Lee will never be able to get into a rhythm or gain the chemistry with his offense needed to contend for national championships if Miles substitutes Jefferson every time Lee leads the Tigers to a score.

If Miles wants to use Jefferson in running situations or on certain packages, that is fine and Tiger fans would appreciate the strategy.  However, constant rotation of quarterbacks never works against high levels of competition and it is certainly not going to work in a stacked Southeastern Conference.

Miles needs to make a decision and the only logical decision is to start Jarrett Lee and play him consistently and let him lead this team.

Modeselektor ft. Thom Yorke ? The White Flash (Trentemller Remix)

This dark and heavy burner was shamelessly sniped from one Sheena Beaston — maybe you’ve heard of her. But there’s no shame in my game when citing the source. Anyway, she’s doing this sweet Polaroid giveaway and happened to post this tune along with it. It had me at “Modeselektor“, then it had me again at “Thom Yorke” then it had me again at “Trentemller“. And then I listened to it and it had me at the dark, brooding intro. Since I don’t really know any of the different kinds of electronic music, I’d imagineread more and hear the song

Report: iPhone, iPad glass crawling with bacteria and viruses

During the winter months in most of the world, you can see pump bottles of antibacterial gel scattered around most businesses as workers and visitors try to keep their hands free of pathogens. Now, a spate of suspiciously similar news items today are warning that the glass screens on iPhones, iPads, and iPods can harbor bacteria.

While that's kind of a big "Duh!" moment -- after all, who hasn't looked at a smeary iPad screen and wondered what kind of bugs are multiplying on the glass -- British researchers in one study found that mobile phones carry 18 times more bacteria than a flush handle in a men's room. Ewwwww. For viruses that have taken up residence on iPhone screens, a single touch can easily transfer them to your fingertips, which then pass the viruses to your eyes, mouth, or nose. Hello, flu!

This isn't something new; the New York Daily News swabbed four iPads in NYC Apple Stores in June, and lab results found Staphylococcus aureus (a common source of staph infections), Candida parapsilosis (a yeast), and Corynebacterium minutissimum (a common source of skin rashes). There are just so many people handing Apple devices at the stores in a typical day that it's almost impossible for them to not pick up bacteria of some sort.

How can you keep yourself from being overrun by disease vectors while using mobile electronics? There are a couple of ways. First, don't share your phone or iPad with others. That's more easily said than done in households with small children, for who Mom and Dad's phones and iPads are just another toy. Second, try to keep the screen clean by using approved cleaning sprays and wipes on a regular basis. For example, I use the Apple-approved iKlear spray and wipes on my iPad and iPhone. Finally, if you do touch a device that has been used by many other people, wash your hands thoroughly after use or use a sanitizing gel.

The reports coming out today might give you pause about handling your iToys, but using a little common sense and regular hygiene practices should keep you from contracting an infection from your devices.

Small Talk: Luol Deng

The Chicago Bulls and Great Britain forward on Cesc Fbregas's future and why he'd like to live in the film Avatar

Hi Luol how are you? Good. How you doin?

How confident are you feeling about this summer's Eurobasket qualifiers? I'm excited, we've got a young team, a very athletic team. We lack some experience but I'd say it will be fun.

Is there more pressure on you with Great Britain than when you're playing with Chicago ? with you being the man and having to carry the team? Yeah, definitely. The other difference is that in Chicago it's 82 games, here it's eight games and you've got to qualify. These are really like play-off games. Every game if you lose, it really hurts you.

You personally are one of the big reasons to be hopeful about this GB basketball team's prospects at the 2012 Olympics, but we hear you're also pretty good at football. Clearly we need some help there too, so do you think you could be persuaded to switch codes? [Chortling] I think I've got to find out exactly where my skill level is. I haven't played since I was 14. Back then when I played I was really good at it. But it's been a while so I'd really have to test where I'm at.

Small Talk envisages a role for you as a big target man to replace Emile Heskey ... I played midfield and I played striker. I kinda played a little similar to [Patrick] Vieira but a lot of times I ended up playing striker.

You're known to be a big Arsenal fan. Do you think they should sell Cesc Fbregas? I think he's going to stay. I hope he does.

You must move in the same circles ? do you ever hang out with the guys on the team? I used to but I haven't in a while. Back when [Thierry] Henry was there I knew a lot of guys on the team then, I was going to practice and stuff. But the last person I really kept in touch with was Philippe Senderos. But I haven't spoken to him in a while.

What's the worst film you've ever seen? The worst? Nobody ever remembers the worst film they ever saw.

On the contrary, in Small Talk's experience everyone does. Nobody. I remember the best, I don't remember the worst. Damn, what's the worst movie I ever saw? See ? I don't remember the name.

What's the best, then? Recently Avatar was the best I've ever seen. I wanted to go and live there. If I could find Avatar I would leave right away and go live there.

Really? Not put off by the enormous dragons, shiny panthers and hamfisted scripting? I like all that though! If I go to Avatar, I'd have some long hair, I'd connect it to the horse, I'd get on the dragon. I wouldn't need gas. Gas costs a lot of money.

Small Talk likes to hope they're paying you enough in Chicago that you don't have to worry too much about gas money. [Laughs] Yeah, but still. If I'm in Avatar I won't need no money, I won't need no credit cards.

Do you believe in aliens then? I definitely do. I believe it's a big universe, there's something out there somewhere. I think whoever reaches the other one first will probably have the better technology.

Yeah, if they get here first we're probably toast, right? Well if they get here first they'll be able to go away and come back. We won't be able to chase them.

What would you do if you were invisible for a day? Wow. I wouldn't like to be invisible for a day. But if I was ? I'd probably be up to no good. I don't know if I can even say that, but I'd be up to no good.

Spying on people? I wouldn't spy on people but ? uh ? I don't know. You know I wouldn't want to be invisible I don't think. I don't like sneaking up on people.

OK, so you don't want to be invisible, but if you could have one super-power what would it be? I always used to say when I was younger that if I had one super-power I would want to read minds. But the older I got, now I really don't want to read minds because I don't want to know what the other person is thinking.

People think a lot of bad stuff ? Maybe I'd travel through time. I would go back all the way to my ancestors and see how it really was back then. I think I would love it ? it would just show you how they had no worries back then.

What's your favourite vegetable? Man, I hate vegetables.

But you're an athlete Luol, you have to eat a lot of vegetables. No, trust me, I eat a lot of vegetables, but I hate them. It's one of those things, it's like doing sit-ups. I hate to do sit-ups, but you know you're going to look good. So my favourite vegetable ? maybe carrot? Is carrot even a vegetable.

It certainly is. Cheese or chocolate. Chocolate, for sure.

Steak or cake? Cake.

Jam or jelly? Jam or jelly? Jam and jelly are the same thing.

Bah ? Small Talk was attempting to test your British credentials after so long in the States. Nah, I go for jam innit.

Good man. Lastly, can you tell us a joke? Can I tell you a joke? Nah, I can't think of one. I really can't ? you've put me on the spot. Even though I joke a lot, I can't think of one.

How about you tell us about the best locker room prank you've seen in your time as a player? One time a rookie ? I'm not going to tell you his name ? was trying to be smart so what the vets did was they took his clothes from the locker room while he showered after the game. And you know after the game you have nothing there. The equipment guy takes everything away and you have to go out because your family's waiting. But he just stayed there for hours. Eventually the equipment guy, who had gone home, had to come back to the stadium because he just wouldn't leave.

A classic manoeuvre. Thanks for all your time Luol, good luck with the qualifiers. Appreciate it, thanks.
