Louis Can't Talk to His 13-Year Old Niece, But Godfrey Can, on 'Louie' (VIDEO)

Amy, 'Louie'So far, we've seen Louis C.K. interacting with his own daughters on 'Louie' (Thu., 10:30PM ET on FX), but they're young enough that he's still kind of the hero in their life story. It's an easy role to play, and it certainly makes talking with them easier.

This week, he got a sneak peek at the challenges in keeping those lines of communication open as they get older when he tried to talk with his 13-year old niece, Amy. He simply could not get through to her, and it's because he was focusing on talking to the kid in front of him.

Denver Broncos Preseason: Backup Brady Quinn Takes a Huge Step Backwards

Brady Quinn was believed to be the undisputed backup quarterback to Kyle Orton for the Denver Broncos this season. That was before he stepped onto the field for his final preseason game.

It wasn't until his third drive of the day that Quinn moved the Broncos with a pass to Matthew Willis for 13 yards. The pass was Quinn's longest pass of the first half.

In the second quarter, Quinn went on a streak of seven straight incomplete passes. His only completion in the second quarter came right before the two-minute warning. He hit Dandre Goodwin for 10 yards. He followed up his only successful play of the second quarter by abruptly passing the ball to Arizona Cardinals' cornerback, Stewart Bradley, setting them up for an easy field goal.

After leaving the game at halftime, Quinn left the Broncos in a huge hole. The Broncos had no points and were down by 20 points.

Quinn's stat line for the night: 4-12, for 26 yards passing, and one  interception. His quarterback rating was a minuscule 7.6 percent. The offense put together zero points.

Quinn did enough on his own to relinquish the backup quarterback position. His utter futility to move the ball, put together any semblance of an offense and fail to do anything positive should earn him the No. 3 spot in the quarterback rotation.

Quinn's performance set him back to the days when he quarterbacked the Cleveland Browns. His last two starts in Cleveland he had passer ratings of 27.7 percent against the Kansas City Chiefs and 48.1 percent against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The majority of the work Quinn was called upon to do was hand the ball off to his running backs.

Those weak performances prompted the Browns to complete a trade with the Broncos for Peyton Hillis. One of the biggest blunders by the Broncos in a long time.

All of that talk about who will clinch the backup spot for the Broncos is over.

Quinn is not the guy.

The guy who should be the backup: Tim Tebow.

Tebow had a 43-yard touchdown pass to Eron Riley. The pass was a perfectly lofted deep ball into the end zone, right in Riley's arms. Tebow's stat line was 7-11 for 116 yards and a touchdown. He showed that he could stand in the pocket, take the pressure and make the passes. The only scoring drive for the Broncos started back at the Broncos six-yard line, where they went 94 yards in 1:36.

Tebow's performance silenced his critics, while Quinn's performance may have stirred up new ones.

NBA's unpopularity contest of LeBron James's Heat and the Mavericks | Michael Solomon

Dallas Mavericks take a 3-2 lead to the court of King James in Miami for the final two games of the NBA finals

Choosing a team to root for in this year's NBA finals has been like deciding whether to let your daughter marry Arnold Schwarzenegger or Dominique Strauss-Kahn.

Seriously, what do you do if you can't stand the Heat ? or the Mavericks?

Consider Miami: the team's schadenfreude-ometer has been registering radioactive levels since last July, when LeBron James announced his decision to take his talents to South Beach. In one of the most unctuous hours in television history, James was not only ungrateful in spurning his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, but he also managed to insult New York and Chicago, with whom he had been flirting. As far as those three cities are concerned, there's a middle seat waiting in the Ninth Circle of Hell for "The Whore of Akron" (as Esquire writer Scott Raab has dubbed him) ? right between Judas and Brutus.

As the season unfolded, it looked as if James and Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh were a team of simony ? sorry, destiny ? but the pressure was clearly getting to them. After a one-point loss to the Chicago Bulls, King James and his court were reportedly crying in their locker room. Crying? With a 43-20 record? Even LBJ's old team, the Cavaliers, didn't get weepy this season, and they went on a 26-game losing streak, tied for the worst ever in American sports history.

But then you have the Dallas Mavericks, a team who look at the NBA's salary cap the same way Suri Cruise sees a shoe sale. In the past decade, the Mavs have spent $851m on players ? nearly a quarter-billion more than the Heat ? but they still don't have a championship to show for it.

Naturally that drought doesn't sit well with Dallas's eternally adolescent owner, Mark Cuban. The 52-year-old billionaire, who often makes Donald Trump seem shy, is at once the best and worst thing to happen to the NBA. While his on-court cheerleading is undoubtedly infectious ? he's not just the owner, he's a fan! ? Cuban's diatribes against the league and its officials have cost him nearly $2m in fines over the years ? including $250,000 after game five of the 2006 NBA finals against Miami. (Petulant show-off that he is, Cuban matches each fine with a donation to charity.)

But here's the funny thing: during this year's finals, Cuban has been silent. Either the NBA commissioner David Stern finally found a diplomatic solution to the Cuban Whistle Crisis, or Cuban himself wisely found the mute button and decided to let his team's play speak for itself.

And it's working.

The ancient Mavericks, led by their 32-year-old warrior Dirk Nowitzki (who has played with a torn tendon in his left hand and despite a triple-digit fever in game four) now have a 3-2 lead over the Heat as the series heads back to Miami this weekend.

Dallas's aggressive defense and rainbow three-pointers have so utterly confounded the South Beach Cerberus of James, Wade and Bosh that LeBron looks like a lost puppy on the court. After calling game five "the biggest of my life", James actually stepped up ? particularly since Wade was hobbled with a hip injury in the first quarter ? and managed a triple double. But when the game was on the line, LBJ once again entered the Witness Protection Program. In the fourth quarter, he scored a whopping two points, bringing his final-quarter total in the series up to an astronomical eleven.

All of which has considerably diluted the Haterade that fans were drinking a week ago. The Mavericks without The Cuban Show are actually a likeable team of old-timers who deserve a champagne shampoo. And now that the Chosen One has become the Frozen One, cheering for the Heat almost feels like charity. Almost. Ether way, if they do win the title, it won't be because of LeBron. And that's a crying shame.

The last two games of the NBA season are to be played in Miami on Sunday and Tuesday (if a game seven is required).

Michael Solomon is the executive editor of Byliner and a former editor at The Daily Beast and ESPN Books.

Glasser ? Treasury Of We (Delorean Remix)

I love Glasser, and I love Delorean. This remix is so distincly Delorean that it hurts, complete with big buildup into big beat drop. It brings me back to my fond memories in Barcelona last month, where I was fortunate enough to see the band live on their home turf along with about a hundred of my closest Spanish hipster friends.

Just got sent this track from Pregnant aka Daniel Trudeau. It’s this weird combination of a glitchy sample set against a quasi-western sounding melody that just kinda works. Interested to see what the rest of this album has in store.

Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac: Faster, new features, better mobility

Parallels 7 has just been announced. The latest iteration of Parallels, the virtualization environment that currently has about 75% of the total market share for VM software, ships with more than 90 new and enhanced features.

As you'd expect, one of the enhancements is the speed of the app. Based on benchmarks run Parallels, the app is 60 percent faster than Parallels Desktop 6 when resuming Windows and up to 45 percent faster for 3D graphics. Lion compatibility is also improved in the new release -- the app allows use of Full Screen mode, Launch Pad, and Mission Control while running Windows apps. Want to run apps that take advantage of the Mac's iSight / FaceTime camera in both Windows and Mac OS at the same time? With Parallels 7, that's now possible.

Developers will love the fact that they can now run OS X Lion in a virtual machine (see screenshot at top of page) -- it's no problem at all to run multiple sessions of Windows and Lion on your Mac. If you don't currently own a Windows license, Parallels now includes "Windows on Demand," a service that lets you purchase and automatically install Windows 7 in a virtual machine on your Mac.

There's also an upgraded capability to connect to virtual machines remotely from iOS devices using the Parallels Mobile App. The app is currently free, but will sell for US$4.99 after 9/1 and eventually jump to $19.99.

Pricing for the new version is $79.99, or $49.99 for an upgrade from Parallels 5 or 6. The Student Edition is available for $39.99. A Switch to Mac edition is available for $99.99 and includes a number of video tutorials on how to use a Mac, and Enterprise volume licenses are available as well.

A full review of Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac and the Parallels Mobile App is coming soon to TUAW, so stay tuned.

Cleveland Cavaliers select Kyrie Irving as first overall pick in NBA draft

? Duke University point guard is top NBA pick
? Irving: 'I've got some big shoes to fill'

The Cleveland Cavaliers selected the Duke point guard Kyrie Irving with the first overall pick in the NBA draft, as they set about rebuilding a team that set new standards for sporting failure last season.

A slick ball handler with size and speed, the Australia-born Irving is expected to be an immediate contributor when he joins a Cavaliers team that crumbled last season after LeBron James spurned them to sign with the Miami Heat.

It is unlikely that Irving will make the jilted Cleveland fans forget James but he may be able to help erase the embarrassment of a 26-game losing streak last season that secured the Cavaliers the No1 overall pick.

"I didn't have any doubts about going to number one," Irving said. "I was looking to the organisation to pick who they felt was the right choice.

"I've got some big shoes to fill. Number one picks, they have a lot of expectations on them and I plan on exceeding them. I'm really not looking to replace LeBron honestly, just try to be Kyrie Irving and just contribute to the Cleveland organisation as much as I can."

Irving played in only 11 games last season after suffering a toe injury but the Cavaliers saw enough to convince them that he was a player to build their team around.

He averaged 17.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game in his shortened season, and also caught the attention of Australian basketball officials, who hope to have the guard leading the national team in future.

"Right now I'm in discussion with the [Australia] head coach Brett Brown and we have been talking for a while about me transitioning from the USA to playing for Australia, but it's a position that's not going to be made right now," said Irving.

"Like I said, we are in conversation ... that will be a decision that I will make further down the road."

The Minnesota Timberwolves used the second pick to select the Arizona forward Derrick Williams before the draft quickly returned to an international flavour with the next five picks coming from outside the US.

With a potential industrial dispute looming, international players were expected to figure prominently in this year's lottery with several highly rated American college prospects choosing to remain in school and ride out the potential strike as the NBA and the players' union negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement.

The Utah Jazz took the Turkish forward Enes Kanter with the third pick while the Cavaliers looked north with the fourth selection to claim Canadian forward Tristan Thompson.

The Toronto Raptors, already one of the NBA's most cosmopolitan teams, added the Lithuanian Jonas Valanciunas to their diverse roster while the Washington Wizards went with Czech Jan Vesely.

The Sacramento Kings took Congo's Bismack Biyembo but shipped the forward to the Charlotte Bobcats in a pre-draft three-team deal to make it six foreign players claimed in the first seven picks.

Miami Heat's late win over Dallas Mavericks earns 2-1 NBA finals lead

? Miami Heat 88-86 Dallas Mavericks
? Chris Bosh put Miami ahead with 39 seconds remaining

The Miami Heat held on for an 88-86 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday to take a 2-1 lead in the NBA finals series.

Chris Bosh put Miami ahead with a jump shot from the baseline with 39.6 seconds left as Miami finally managed to contain Dirk Nowitzki in the closing seconds to hold on for victory.

"This is a total win," said Dwayne Wade, who led Miami with 29 points and 11 rebounds. "You want to win the game on the defensive end of the floor and we got a stop."

Recent history suggests this was a huge win for the Heat. The Game Three winner in tied finals series has gone on to win the championship each of the 11 times it has happened since the 2-3-2 format began in 1985.

The Heat are headed into Game Four on Tuesday with a chance to do what they did in 2006: win it all on Dallas's floor. They'll need to win that game and the next, on Thursday.

"I feel like we did nothing but get home-court advantage back," Wade said. "But the next game is a big game. We have to bring our hard hats, understanding it's going to be tougher to win that game than it was to win this one. I believe in this team. If anyone can do it, I believe we can."

The Heat, who blew a 15-point lead in the last quarter of Game Two, nearly did it again on Sunday, coughing up a 14-point lead. They led 81-74 with 6min 31sec left and Miami's players knew the Mavericks' comeback bid would be in Nowitzki's hands, but they still couldn't stop the German, who scored 12 straight Dallas points with six free throws, a layup, a dunk and a tough jumper to make it 86-86.

Miami went back in front when Bosh sank a clutch jumper from the baseline. It was even more impressive considering his left eyelid was swollen because of an accidental poke in the first quarter, and he'd been misfiring all series, even when his vision was good.

"I don't care if he missed 15 in a row," James said. "He was wide open and that's his sweet spot. It's the trust we have in each other's ability, no matter what the point of the game is at."

The Mavericks of course went back to Nowitzki on its last two chances. Right after Bosh scored, Nowitzki wanted to take a shot near the foul line but was double-teamed and his attempted pass went out of bounds.

After the final timeout, Dallas had 4.4 seconds left to go for the tie or win. The inbounds pass went to Nowitzki and he was alone against Udonis Haslem just above the foul line. Haslem walked the fine line between disrupting the shot while avoiding a foul, and the German's shot bounced off the rim.

"He's a great player, 7 feet, so he's going to shoot over me," Haslem said. "I've got to make it tough on him."

When the buzzer went off, Haslem screamed in delight as the Dallas crowd groaned.

"Emotional game, fought back, and to fall short at the end is tough," said Nowitzki who scored 34 points. "But they need two more. Hopefully we can play a better all-around game and finally get some shots to go down."

Wade made 12 of 21 shots and was at his dynamic best from the start, looking like the player who lifted the Heat past Dallas and to the title in 2006.

"He was aggressive and took good shots," Bosh said. "We rode the wave for a little while. He set the tone for us."

Most of his baskets came in the paint where the Heat outscored the Mavs 40-22 and many of them were spectacular. But he also stemmed Dallas's rally by hitting a go-ahead jumper over Kidd for Miami's second-to-last basket, and he made sure to keep his team-mates properly focused, offering praise or scolding when needed. When James was duped into a shot-clock violation in the final minutes, Wade pounded his fists on his head in frustration.

"I've been here before," Wade said. "So [I was] just trying to lead. My guys did a great job of following that lead. We were able to come out with the win."

Wade and Bosh each scored seven points in the fourth quarter. Bosh finished with 18 points.

LeBron James finished with 17 points and nine assists. He also had four turnovers, including a pair during the fourth quarter not counting the shot-clock violation that helped bring Dallas back.

Nowitzki scored 15 points in the fourth quarter, but didn't get much help, in the period or the rest of the game.

Terry scored 15 and Shawn Marion had 10. Both were shut out in the fourth quarter. The only other scorers were backup point guard JJ Barea early in the quarter and Tyson Chandler dunking off a rebound.

For the game, Nowitzki made 11 shots, the rest of the Mavericks 17.

"We have to have somebody step up besides Dirk," said Jason Kidd, who had nine points and 10 assists, but also four turnovers. Giveaways haunted Dallas throughout the game, especially the first half, helping keep Miami comfortably ahead. "We have to figure out how to get up front and play up front. The big thing is we've got to be able to make plays late in the game. Game Two we made the plays, Game Three we just didn't."

Openwave accuses Apple and RIM of patent infringement

This story is getting familiar enough that you could generate Mad Libs out of it. Company you've never heard of is accusing successful, household name corporations of infringing its patents on drop-dead obvious features that devices have had for years and is seeking an injunction on device imports unless the "infringing" companies agree to surrender their lunch money pay licensing fees.

In this case the company you've never heard of is Openwave, and according to GigaOM it's accusing Apple and RIM of infringing patents on these features:

  • Allows a user to use e-mail applications on a mobile device when the network is unavailable - such as when a user is on an airplane.
  • Allows the mobile device to operate seamlessly, and securely, with a server over a wireless network.
  • Allows access to updated versions of applications on mobile devices.
  • Allows consumers to experience an improved user experience in navigating through various pages of information without delay.
  • Enables data in the cloud to be accessed or shared by different devices such as mobile handsets or computers.

No word on why only Apple and RIM have been singled out, as these are features included in virtually every single smartphone manufacturer's devices today. Openwave's release basically claims that it invented both mobile internet browsing and photo messaging in 1997 and 2001 respectively, so it's also unclear why the company has waited this long to recoup the "losses" it's incurred due to "infringement" on its intellectual property. So it goes.

Ask TUAW: Disk Permissions, Wireless Syncing in iOS 5, Attachments on the iPhone, and More!

Welcome to Ask TUAW, our weekly (mostly) question-and-answer column. First off, we're back! Our intrepid question-and-answerer has spent the last month moving across the country and getting settled into a new place. Now, finally, it's time to answer some questions! A lot has happened since our last column: Lion has been released, a number of new versions of the iOS 5 beta have been released, iCloud is nearing completion, and now iTunes Match is out in beta. Exciting stuff!

I'm sure everyone has lots of questions about all these things, so please ask them! We can't have this awesome Q&A column without the Q, so go to the comments of this post and ask away. If you'd prefer, instead of asking questions in the comments, you can email your questions directly to ask@tuaw.com, or simply ping us on Twitter.

For our first question, David asks:

I was wondering why Apple has killed support for WinXP for iCloud. Does this mean iTunes will no longer support it either? Is there a programming API that is only supported in Vista/Win7? Many people have older machines such as myself that love Apple products. What is the reason for dropped support (please don't say only that XP is old). I'm sure there is a better answer than that. Until I can save some more money to buy a Mac I'm stuck with this older machine.

<lyrics>Deep inside the steamy swamp
My sleepy eyes have watched for years
There's food that I can chomp
I don't have any fears
I'm strong, I'm very strong

I've had the same address since time began
A million years more than men
I'm happy if I'm left alone
The reason why is well known

I slither and slide and crunch my teeth

I, I'm a survivor with a deadly smile
I, I'm a survivor, I'm a crocodile

The dinosaurs were friendly too
But I don't trust, all I do is east
I bite and roll and chew
I never miss a beat
I'm wise, I'm very wise

I've had the same address since time began
A million years more than men
I'm happy if I'm left alone
The reason why is well known

I, I'm a survivor with a deadly smile
I, I'm a survivor, I'm a crocodile

Look into my eyes
I'll cut you down to size
I'm not scared of you guys
Come over here don't be shy

I've had the same address since time began
A million years more than men
I'm happy if I'm left alone
The reason why is well known

I, I'm a survivor with a deadly smile
I, I'm a survivor, I'm a crocodile
