TUAW's Daily Mac App: PDF Signer

These days almost all forms are distributed online as PDFs. However, when you need to sign one, you normally need to print it and scan it back in for an email, or even worse, use a fax. Luckily, there are apps for that.

PDF Signer allows you to fill out and sign PDF forms. You can enter text in any pre-defined text boxes the form might have, but if the form isn't that advanced, you can enter text in text boxes of your own creation anywhere on the PDF using the "Add Text" tool.

Once you've filled in all the relevant information, now comes the tricky bit -- getting the form signed. Unfortunately, there is no direct signing support within PDF Signer. Instead you have to overlay an image file of your signature, which you've created elsewhere, on the form. Once you've selected the appropriate image, you can resize it to fit the box and save or print the PDF.

If you've got an image file of your signature handy, PDF signer makes short work of signing PDF forms. But given that you can enter text on PDFs using OS X's Preview, I would have liked to see some sort of tablet or trackpad support for creating a signature, not just inserting an image overlay.

PDF Signer is available from the Mac App Store for $9.99.

Most-expensive.net has compiled a list of the ten most expensive iPad apps. The apps range in price from US$299.99 all the way up to $999.99.

The top three most expensive apps all cost $999.99.

• The Alchemist SMS helps the steelmaking and scrap metal recycling industry reduce raw material costs.
• Intuition Control Solo WolfVision lets you control WolfVision visualizers.
• BarMax CA provides a bar exam prep course.

The thing about these $1000 apps is they actually do perform very useful functions for a limited audience, unlike other apps that cost a grand.

George Lucas: I Have 50 Hours of 'Star Wars' TV Series Planned

A live-action 'Star War's TV show? Yes, it's been talked about before, but George Lucas has been mum on details ... until now.

According to the New York Post, Lucas has 50 hours of a 'Star Wars' TV series planned. That's at least two seasons.

What's the hold up? Technology. Lucas reportedly told G4 that he's waiting for "a different type of technology we can use so it's economically feasible to shoot the shows."

Lucas said the financial difference between producing movies and TV shows is too vast right now.

Look Who's Back! '90s Stars Return to TV

With the US networks' upfronts completed, it's time for us TV writers to start picking out trends from the announcements. Is the crime drama dying? Is comedy 'back'? One trend for 2011's fall TV that's hard to miss is the return of a large handful of '90s and early 2000s TV stars who've been away from the small screen.

It's sort of like all the popular kids from high school went off to college, where they majored in things like the comedy-horror movie, highly publicized relationships and dubious art house films, and now they're back -- a little older, a little wiser and with way better hair. Welcome home, kids.

Teresa's Brother Isn't Ready to Forgive on 'Real Housewives of New Jersey' (VIDEO)

Teresa was at least extending an olive branch of peace to little brother Joe on 'The Real Housewives of New Jersey' (Mon., 9PM ET on Bravo). Probably because she's one of the series' actual stars, his wife Melissa read Teresa's letter to him.

She chose a letter because "sometimes when we speak, neither one of us really listens," she wrote. In the letter she apologizes for hurting him and his family, which shocked Melissa right there, and asked him to call so they could meet face-to-face and try to rebuild their family.

Joe, however, didn't appear ready to let the past be the past. "She hurt you. She hurt me. She hurt our kids. It's hard to let it go," he said.

TUAW's Daily iPhone App: Air Penguin

Air Penguin from GAMEVIL is one of those deceptively simple, casual pick-up-and-play games for US$0.99 on the App Store. What I look for in these types of games are polish and a great control scheme. Luckily, Air Penguin has both. Your goal is to jump and slide your way through levels until your penguin safely arrives at the end of the series of obstacles and challenges in your way. Usually this means having your penguin jump or slide around obstacles, or ride various sea critters around obstacles. You pick up what look like Goldfish crackers for scoring, although the primary goal is to simply complete a level without falling in the water. Apparently your penguin cannot swim very well.

The controls are based on tilt only and cannot be changed. The good news is that the controls are responsive without being too twitchy. It is possible to adjust the sensitivity, and before you begin a level, there's a countdown that allows you to level your iPhone (resetting the tilt). You can change the penguin's direction in the air, which is useful because certain levels require you to juke around obstacles while in midair -- tricky but not impossible. Sometimes you're able to flick the iPhone up at the end of a run and go flying through the air (the dream of many penguins). When you're not airborne, you might be sliding across the snow, controlling the velocity and direction with tilt. You may also ride an animal, again controlling speed and direction with tilt.

Air Penguin is simplicity itself, and its speedy gameplay, polished graphics and sound and adequate controls make it a pleasant diversion for kids and adults. I have no idea what the extra fish you can buy via in-app purchases are used for, but you get 50 free fish for fun. You won't need much beyond the $0.99 price to have a quick, enjoyable game. Foxconn worker from Chengdu factory commits suicide

Sadly, a 20-year-old male employee at Foxconn (Apple's contract manufacturer for many products) committed suicide Thursday morning, according to a report from the Hong Kong China News Agency (HKCNA) cited by Bloomberg. The worker was reportedly employed at the company's new facility in Chengdu where an explosion killed three workers on May 20.

Further details about Thursday morning's incident are sparse, and the reasons behind the factory worker's suicide are currently unknown. This is at least the 14th publicized death by suicide among Foxconn's workforce since the start of 2010.

Foxconn chairman Terry Gou declined to comment about the incident saying he doesn't know the full details about the apparent suicide. However, last year, Gou said suicides by Foxconn employees were prompted by personal issues rather than tough working conditions in his company's facilities.

Labor groups like China Labor Watch disagree. Foxconn's critics have slammed the Taipei-based company for operating facilities with a sweatshop atmosphere -- an accusation Gou vehemently denies.

In response to last year's suicides and subsequent harsh criticism, Foxconn, which builds electronic products for several other recognizable brands including Sony and Dell, raised wages, slashed overtime, offered counseling, and tried to improve the work-life balance for its more than one million factory workers in China.

Although Foxconn's suicide rate remains markedly lower than China's national average, Thursday morning's death, last Friday's explosion, and protests outside a Foxconn shareholder meeting earlier this month suggest the manufacturer has more work to do to improve employee safety and overall satisfaction.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the friends and family of the young man who died.

NBA review: Chicago Bulls take top seed status for play-offs

? Bulls close regular season with ninth straight victory
? San Antonio Spurs lose 106-103 to the Phoenix Suns

Kyle Korver scored 19 points as the Chicago Bulls closed the regular season with their ninth straight victory, beating the New Jersey Nets 97-92. The Bulls had to wait for San Antonio's result to see who would be seeded No1 for the play-offs ? with the Spurs' loss to Phoenix earning them home-court advantage.

Joakim Noah finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds to help the Bulls finish 62-20, equalling their best showing since the 1997-98 championship season. They begin their play-off campaign against the Indiana Pacers.

Suns 106, Spurs 103

Marcin Gortat had 21 points and 13 rebounds as Phoenix denied San Antonio their chance to secure home-court advantage throughout the play-offs. The Spurs, who at 61-21 finished a game behind Chicago for the best record in the NBA, lost Manu Ginobili to injury early in the game. San Antonio will open against Memphis in the play-offs.

Lakers 116, Kings 108, OT

Lakers star Kobe Bryant scored 36 points and forced overtime with a tying three-pointer with 4.8 seconds left in regulation, as the Kings lost what might be their last game in Sacramento. A standing-room only crowd packed the 17,317-seat capacity arena, clanking cow bells and roaring louder than they had in years. With the team mulling a move to Anaheim, fans brought handmade signs and cheered their loudest to will the team back. Instead, the Lakers pulled away in overtime to take the No2 seed in the Western Conference, setting up a first-round series against New Orleans. Marcus Thornton had 33 points and Tyreke Evans added 16 for the Kings.

Heat 97, Raptors 79

Eddie House scored a career-high 35 points and Juwan Howard added 18 as Miami beat Toronto. With the Heat assured of the second seed in the East, Miami's coach, Erik Spoelstra, rested LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Miami will host Philadelphia in its post-season opener. House's previous career best was 31, set against Utah on 18 November 2005. He was seven of 13 from three-point range. The Heat have won four straight and 15 of 18 heading into the play-offs. Jerryd Bayless scored 21 points for Toronto.

Celtics 112, Knicks 102

At Boston, Avery Bradley scored a career-high 20 points to help Boston's "B'' team beat New York's second string. Glen "Big Baby" Davis had 17 points and eight rebounds, and Sasha Pavlovic added a season-high 19 points as the Celtics ended a two-game losing streak. Amare Stoudemire played 20 minutes and scored 14 points for New York.

Magic 92, Pacers 74

Ryan Anderson scored 14 points, and Dwight Howard had 13 points and 13 rebounds in a short night in Orlando's victory over Indiana. Mike Dunleavy and Brandon Rush both scored 16 points for Indiana. The Pacers will open their first play-off series in five years against top-seeded Chicago, while the Magic will host Atlanta in a match-up of the fourth and fifth seeds.

Clippers 110, Grizzlies 103

Blake Griffin had 31 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in the 82nd and final game of his spectacular rookie season for Los Angeles. Griffin sat out all 82 games last season after hurting his knee in the final pre-season game and having surgery. He was the only player to appear in every game this season when injuries plagued the team. Eric Gordon added 24 points and DeAndre Jordan had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Los Angeles. The Clippers finished 32-50 to miss the playoffs again.

Mavericks 121, Hornets 89

Dirk Nowitzki scored 12 of his 32 points in the decisive third quarter, leading Dallas past New Orleans. Dallas wound up No 3 in the Western Conference and will face Portland in the opening round. New Orleans hung on to the seventh spot because Memphis also lost. The Hornets will face the Lakers. Jarrett Jack led New Orleans with 22 points.

Warriors 110, Trail Blazers 86

Reggie Williams scored 28 points, and Stephen Curry had 18 points and nine assists in Golden State's victory over Portland. Dorell Wright had 20 points to cap a breakout season for the veteran forward and David Lee added 13 points for the Warriors. Patty Mills had a career-high 23 points and Wesley Matthews added 18 points for Portland, which already had secured the No6 seed in the Western Conference.

Bucks 110, Thunder 106, OT

Brandon Jennings scored 16 points as Milwaukee beat Oklahoma City. Jennings outscored the Thunder 8-2 in the final 2:21, hitting the go-ahead reverse layup with 56.8 seconds left and then hitting two free throws to put the game away. Russell Westbrook scored 20 points and Kevin Durant added 14 in a season-low 23 minutes as the Thunder gave their starters a lightened load with the playoffs looming. Oklahoma City will be the No4 seed in the Western Conference and open against Denver.

Jazz 107, Nuggets 103

At Salt Lake City, rookie Gordon Hayward scored a career-high 34 points and hit five three-pointers to lift Utah past play-off-bound Denver. The game meant little to the Nuggets, who already had secured the Western Conference's No5 seed and rested many of their players. Wilson Chandler led the Nuggets with 27 points.

Bobcats 96, Hawks 85

Gerald Henderson scored 20 points, and DJ Augustin added 17 points and seven assists as Charlotte sent Atlanta into the play-offs on a six-game losing streak. With no starter playing more than 25 minutes and only Kirk Hinrich (10 points) scoring in double figures, the coach, Larry Drew, earned the Hawks rest, but no momentum heading into their first-round game at Orlando.

Pistons 104, 76ers 100

Rodney Stuckey scored 29 points, and Tayshaun Prince had 14 to help Detroit hand play-off-bound Philadelphia its fifth loss in six games. Jrue Holiday led the 76ers with 21 points. They will open the play-offs against Miami.

Cavaliers 100, Wizards 93

At Cleveland, Ramon Sessions scored 27 points and JJ Hickson added 15 as Cleveland closed out one of the worst seasons in franchise history and the first in eight years without LeBron James. The Cavs finished 19-63, an extreme drop after going a league-best 61-21 during the regular season in 2010. Andray Blatche scored 20 for Washington.

Rockets 121, Timberwolves 102

At Minneapolis, Chase Budinger scored a career-high 35 points and Kevin Martin added 25 for Houston. Michael Beasley scored 34 points and Anthony Randolph had 23 for Minnesota. The Timberwolves lost their last 15 games of the season to finish with the worst record in the NBA at 15-65.

Spot the Dot for iPad is a fun, simple children's game

Don't look now, but it's 2011 out there. Contemporary kids are playing with contemporary toys, and Ruckus Media Group's iPad-only app Spot the Dot (US$3.99) is an example of just that. Spot the Dot was created by author David A. Carter, whose One Red Dot book (among others) inspired the app.

Spot the Dot is a fun mix of memory, visual discrimination and puzzles that will keep toddlers engaged. Most importantly, the game encourages adults to sit with the young player(s) and offer another level of engagement. When used as intended, Spot the Dot is more than an electronic baby sitter. Here's my review.

French Open: 41-0, Djokovic Defeats Gasquet & Advances to Quarterfinals

It was the World No. 2's 43rd consecutive win, he is 46-0 if you count the Hopman Cup, and he remains 41-0 in 2011 .Novak Djokovic moves on to the quarterfinals at Roland Garros after taking out Frenchman Richard Gasquetin three sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. 

The commentators didn't seem to even give Richard Gasquet a chance against the Serbian and pointed out the last time Djokovic was defeated was by Roger Federer in the ATP World Tour Finals in London in 2010. Djokovic won 90% of points on his first serve with zero double faults and eight aces.

Djokovic will face Fabio Fognini next in his fifth French Open quarterfinal. He is 2-1 against Fognini. Fognini edged Djokovic in the Rome qualifiers round in 2006.

Djokovic made some comments about the elusive and new Babolat balls, "The balls are different and it is a bit frustrating that we didn't have these balls prior to Roland Garros. I think that it's something that we have to try to plan in the future- to use the same tennis balls that we use in the whole clay court season especially before the Grand Slam. But that's the way it is and it's the same conditions for everybody. I've been playing good enough with these balls to be happy with my game."

Jim Tressel: Ohio State Coach Tressel Reportedly Resigns from Program

Jim Tressel, Ohio State Football Head Coach, Reportedly Resigns from Program

Jim Tressel, Ohio State Buckeyes head football coach, has stepped down from the program, according to The Columbus Dispatch.

Tressel was being further investigated by the NCAA for violations beyond the ones that he had admitted to earlier in the season.

Between the allegations of knowing about Terrelle Pryor and other teammates selling memorabilia to a local tattoo parlor and former player Ray Small’s confessions, it was a matter of time before Tressel had to step down.

Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee said in a memo that The Columbus Dispatch obtained:

I write to let you know that later this morning we will be announcing the resignation of Jim Tressel as head coach of the University's football program. As you all know, I appointed a special committee to analyze and provide advice to me regarding issues attendant to our football program. In consultation with the senior leadership of the University and the senior leadership of the Board, I have been actively reviewing the matter and have accepted Coach Tressel's resignation. My public statement will include our common understanding that throughout all we do, we are One University with one set of standards and one overarching mission. The University's enduring public purposes and its tradition of excellence continue to guide our actions

The departure marks the beginning of the end of a tough stretch for Ohio State University and its athletic program.

While the sanctions from the NCAA will still follow for the school, it is hoping that with Tressel leaving on his own, the NCAA will not punish Ohio State like it did USC.

Tressel admitted to knowing what was going on and accepted the blame in the Pryor incident, so to say that what Ray Small said wasn’t true is silly.

The culture of Ohio State was tainted by the lack of control in Tressel’s program, and it will be better off with him out of the program.

Ohio State can use the $3.7 million that it paid Tressel each year and persuade someone like Urban Meyer to step in and bring the program out of the darkness.

TLC's 'Surprise Homecoming,' which premieres with a special sneak peek on Memorial Day (Mon., May 30, 10PM ET; the series officially premieres Mon., July 11, 10PM ET), aims to change that. The show reunites military men and women with their loved ones when they return from serving time overseas. Hosted by Billy Ray Cyrus, it gives viewers an inside look at what it's really like to be away from your life for so long, and how emotional it can be to come back.



Each hour-long episode will feature three different surprise homecomings, as well as some personal home videos. In Monday's sneak peek, we'll see a soldier making it home just in time to celebrate a special day for his wife, and a surprise that prompts Cyrus to go undercover to help make it happen.

Paget Brewster Returning to 'Criminal Minds': Report

Paget Brewster is returning to 'Criminal Minds.'

Brewster and co-star A.J. Cook made headlines last summer after CBS axed Cook and reduced Brewster's episode count for season 6.

According to Deadline, with Brewster and Cook returning to the series, recent addition Rachel Nichols has been let go.

In December, Brewster was reportedly asked to rejoin the cast as a full series regular, but she turned down the deal to do the comedy pilot 'My Life as an Experiment.' However, NBC passed on the pilot.

Last year, news of Brewster's reduced deal and Cook's dismissal sparked fan protest. Viewers took to the web and started Twitter campaigns and petitions.

Cleveland Browns Have Other Needs, But Can?t Skip Best Player In 2012 NFL Mock Draft

Colt McCoy appears to be on his way to a solid NFL career, and if Andrew Luck were any other quarterback, the Browns would almost certainly stay with McCoy and spend this pick elsewhere. Luck, though, is such a transcendent talent that Cleveland cannot afford not to pick him.

Luck appears to be the surest thing as an NFL QB since Peyton Manning. He has the build (6?4?, 235 lbs), the arm and the accuracy (70.7 percent completion last year) to be an immediate sensation.

Although Luck will no longer have the benefit of standout QB tutor Jim Harbaugh (gone to the San Francisco 49ers), it?s hard to imagine him not developing even further in his junior year. He has a chance to lead his team to a national title, which would elevate his reputation that much farther into the stratosphere.

Cleveland?s sub-par receiving corps and middling offensive line won?t do Luck any favors, but he would still be the frontrunner for offensive rookie of the year.

UFC 130 Results: Brian Stann Rising Fast in UFC Middleweight Division

On a night that was short on big winners, former WEC Light Heavyweight Champion Brian Stann was one of the biggest winners at UFC 130. 

With his knockout win over Sengoku veteran Jorge Santiago, Stann is now 3-0 at middleweight, with all three wins coming by stoppage. With his penchant for finishing fights and his compelling personal story, the "All-American" is looking more and more like the UFC's next star at 185 pounds. 

Since moving to 185 in August, Stann has produced two Fight of the Night performances and a thunderous knockout of Chris Leben at UFC 125. He's got the discipline that one expects from Greg Jackson-trained fighters, but he's also become a reliable source of stand-up fireworks. Couple that with the way he presents himself and connects with the fans - Wanderlei Silva spoke of not wanting to be booed as part of his motivation for turning down a fight with Stann - and the former Marine officer has just about everything the UFC could want in a fighter.

Stann still has yet to make the case that he's a viable contender to Anderson Silva and the UFC Middleweight Championship - a strong wrestling base seems to be the most effective weapon against "The Spider" and Stann doesn't come from that background - but at the same time, Silva hasn't fought anyone from the Jackson camp since he faced Nate Marquardt at UFC 73, and the discipline of Jackson-trained fighters has been getting better and better, to say nothing of the influence of Stann's military background on his approach in the cage.

Of course, it'll take a couple more wins before Stann can be considered for a title shot, but after dispatching Santiago, it's hard to see him not getting those victories. For now, he's moving right along.
