'The Cape' Season 1, Episode 9 Recap

['The Cape' - 'Razer']

I come not here to bury 'The Cape,' though by all accounts what we saw tonight was the last episode of the series that will ever air. What started out as an unencumbered show that promised a relatively light and colorful approach to the superhero genre ended with an episode that featured gang violence, torture, and at least two characters with significant mental instability. 'Razer,' like so much of the show, wasn't Must See TV so much as Must Take Aspirin TV.

That's a cheap joke, but it's as instructive to look at where shows go wrong as where they go right. It's fitting that this show featured the least amount of Tripp Faraday to date, since the show's initial reason for being (a father giving hope to a son) was lost in a series of Characters in Search of a Rogue's Gallery. One-name villains like Chess, Scales, Dice and Razer dotted the landscape. But so did a carnival, a carnival with a shady leader who had a plan of his own. There was also an attempt to look at the first police state in America, and a vigilante blogger threatening to expose everything, and ... yea, my head hurts too.

Win Win ? Interleave (XXXChange?s 1993 Mix)

This is likely to be one of the clubbier tracks that I’ve posted in a while, but it’ll be a nice change up. The song is from Win Win, a group that (as I learned on WeLikeItIndie) was created by Spank Rock founder XXXChange who approached one of his friends Chris Devlin of Devlin & Darko (who just so happened to be the fantastic post show DJs at this years Yeasayer NYE extravaganza) to make some music, and the two then joined forces with visual artist Ghostdad to round things out. NFL Draft 2011:Cameron Newton, the Icon of Scouting Combine?

Before the start of the NFL Scouting Combine, quarterback Cameron Newton told reporters that he does not see himself as just a football player, but more like "an entertainer and icon."

It looks as though Newton will at least play one game of NFL football, even after a less-than-spectacular throwing performance at the Combine. Scouts still think that Newton's natural talents, his strong arm, his powerful stride, and unshakable confidence, are enough to ensure success at the next level.

For Newton, however, running and throwing maybe a minor element in his superstardom.

The 21-year-old Heisman Trophy Winner has signed with IMG Worldwide, a media production and talent representation firm with a foot in most media doorways.

With IMG developing the Cam Newton brand, Newton could be right by the time all is said and done, he may very well be an icon.

If Newton's arm is slow to develop, he already possesses the jaw line, the smile and the body to do the modeling.

Like Mark Sanchez before him, who was featured in a GQ spread frolicking on the beach like David Hasselhoff, Newton may have a future in print media. Plus, IMG has a hand in representing both models and designers.

As I mentioned in a previous article, expect to see Newton in shoulder pads on Sunday, and in Armani underwear at the newsstand on Tuesday morning.

IMG Worldwide also produces reality television. Not to say there are plans for a reality show starring Newton, but if Chad Ochocinco got a dating show, why not give Newton a documentary–esque show profiling the young QB's first taste of the NFL?

People love redemption stories and, considering all Newton has been through in the last year, he has much to prove.

Though football fans don't know what to make of Newton, or his comments, he may end up being the only working player from the 2011 NFL Draft come this fall.

The possibility of a lockout still hangs over the head of the NFL. Without football, something will need to fill the gigantic whole left in the 24 hour media schedule.

Television and the web are media monsters with an insatiable appetite.

A healthy helping of Cameron Newton may be next on the menu.

Dustin Penner, the New Kris Versteeg: Why the LA Kings Overpaid

It seems the Philadelphia Flyers set a rather expensive precedent with their blockbuster acquisition of former Toronto Maple Leaf Kris Versteeg a few weeks ago.

When the Flyers sent their first- and third-round picks to the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Flyers basically set the price for similarly valued Dustin Penner.

And the Kings were willing to pay it.

They have sent their first round pick, a conditional second round pick next year, and defensive prospect Colten Teubert to the rebuilding Edmonton Oilers for Penner. You have to wonder—was the price too high?

Consider the Versteeg trade, as it is the most similar one that has occurred in the NHL this season. Versteeg has been getting top-six minutes with the offensively loaded Flyers, and seeing some time on the power play. But he has struggled to find chemistry with his teammates, and has only one goal (an empty-netter) and one assist in his first six games with his new club.

An argument could be made that both Versteeg and Penner have time left on their current contracts and are not rentals. They were acquired for the long haul. But if the future is what matters, not winning now, why send so much potential future value away?

Now, to be fair, it's possible that Edmonton Oilers GM Steve Tambellini demanded such a high price, and that the Versteeg deal had no impact whatsoever on this one. But even if that is the case, is Dustin Penner truly worth the price? Yes, he is a Stanley Cup winner (with the Ducks in 2007), and he has shown flashes of offensive brilliance. In an absolute best-case scenario, he finds chemistry with playmaker Anze Kopitar on the top line, something Los Angeles has been searching for all year after the Marco Sturm experiment failed.

But who's to say such chemistry is likely, or even possible?

Head coach Terry Murray has tried Andrei Loktionov, the aforementioned Marco Sturm, Dustin Brown, Brad Richardson and Wayne Simmonds as a scoring winger to complement Kopitar. So far, none have shown the type of offensive chemistry or consistency that will carry the Kings far in the playoffs this year and lead the team offensively in the future.

So is Dustin Penner the guy to turn that around? And if he is, is he worth two picks—one of which is a first rounder—and a strong defensive prospect?

Consider this scenario—Dustin Penner offers a modest offensive contribution to the Kings this season as he tries to fit in with a new team and a new scheme with only 20 games left before the playoffs. They finish off their season at the same pace they're currently on, and finish at or near the five seed in the Western Conference. Their first round pick would probably be somewhere around 20th overall, which is not a worthless pick at all.

But equally likely is the possibility that Penner doesn't gel and the Kings hit a cold streak. In such a competitive conference, one bad stretch or bad injury could knock the Kings right out of the playoff picture, making that first round pick even more valuable.

So was Penner really worth it?

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Americans Abroad: Maurice Edu Scores for Rangers

maurice edu us national teamThe U.S. national team's central midfield depth chart seems to get more and more crowded by the week.

Presumed starters Jermaine Jones and Michael Bradley recently left less-than-enviable club situations for new homes in the English Premier League, with Blackburn Rovers and Aston Villa (still to be finalized), respectively.

Stuart Holden has been starring at Bolton, Sacha Kljestan has been contributing at Anderlecht, and despite playing different positions for much of their careers, Jonathan Spector and Jonathan Bornstein are getting minutes in the middle for their clubs.

Then there's Ricardo Clark, Benny Feilhaber and José Torres, who went to the World Cup, and up-and-comers like Mikkel Diskerud and Dax McCarty.

Amid it all, Maurice Edu is doing his best to avoid getting lost in the shuffle.

Making his second start for Ranters since returning from a two-month injury layoff, Edu scored the opener in Saturday's 2-1 win over Motherwell in the Scottish League Cup semifinals.

<lyrics>

I'm not surprised
Not everything lasts
I've broken my heart so many times
I've stopped keeping track
I talk myself in
I talk myself out
I get all worked up
Then I let myself down

I tried so very hard not to lose it
I came up with a million excuses
I thought I thought of every possibility

And I know someday that it'll all turn out
You make me work so we can work to work it out
And I promise you kid that I'll give so much more than I get
I just haven't met you yet

I might have to wait
I'll never give up
I guess it's half timing
And the other's half's luck
Wherever you are
Whenever it's right
You'll come out of nowhere and into my life

And I know that we can be so amazing
And baby your love is gonna change me
And now I can see every possibility, mhm

And somehow I know that it'll all turn out
And you make me work so we can work to work it out
And I promise you kid I'll give so much more than I get
I just haven't met you yet

They say all's fair
And In love and war
But I won't need to fight it
We'll get it right and
We'll be united

And I know that we can be so amazing
And being in your life is gonna change me
And now I can see every single possibility

And someday I know it'll all turn out
And I'll work to work it out
Promise you kid I'll give more than I get
Than I get, than I get, than I get

Oh you know it'll all turn out
And you'll make me work so we can work to work it out
And I promise you kid to give so much more than I get
Yeah I just haven't met you yet

I just haven't met you yet
Oh promise you kid
To give so much more than I get

I said love love love love love love love........
I just haven't met you yet
Love love love..........

Acrylics ? Sparrow Song (feat. Caroline Polachek)

Brooklyn duo Acrylics hadn’t really been on my radar at all until this song arrived in my inbox. It’s really just a matter of me never hearing of the Molly Shea and Jason Klauber musical project, but I feel like that is about to change thanks to this tune. “Sparrow Song” is a track off the upcoming Acrylics LP Lives and Treasures and features backup vocals by Chairlift‘s very own Caroline Polachek, so that’s pretty cool. To say that this song is channeling a decade gone by would clearly be an understatement asread more and hear the song

No Tears for Hampton's Jerica Jenkins in Fight With Hodgkin's Lymphoma

Filed under:

Jerica JenkinsWhen doctors told Hampton point guard Jerica Jenkins that she had cancer, she cried for a long time that April day.

It's an understandable reaction, even more so for a high school freshman, which she was at the time of the diagnosis of Hodgkin's lymphoma.

That day ended, and, so too did Jenkins' tears, as it's coming up on seven years since that day, and she hasn't wasted any water on her cancer.

"I was shocked," said Jenkins, a 5-foot-4 junior from Lancaster, Tex. "I didn't believe it. I was 14. I was like, 'There's no way I have cancer.' I just couldn't believe it. I cried right then. Then, I realized that I had to deal with it and move on."

There were enough tears to go around that first day when Jenkins got the diagnosis two days after a biopsy. She and her mother cried and prayed, and then got after beating Hodgkin's, a lymphoma with a relatively high treatment rate, if detected early.

Andy Gray, Richard Keys Taken Off Air for Sexist Comments

LONDON (AP) -- Two of Britain's leading soccer commentators were reprimanded by their TV network and taken off the air Monday after making sexist remarks about two female game officials and a team executive.

Andy Gray and Richard Keys were disciplined Monday for derogatory comments about Sian Massey's suitability as a lineswoman for a Premier League game the commentators were working Saturday for Sky Sports.

Gray and Keys have been respected voices in soccer for the past 20 years. They also criticized the ability of former Premier League official Wendy Toms and a column written by West Ham executive Karren Brady in the Sun newspaper that day.

The men have privately apologized to their employer. Sky said the two have been warned and "reminded of their responsibilities." They will not work the show Monday night when Bolton hosts Chelsea in the Premier League.

"They (the comments) are inexcusable from anyone at Sky, regardless of their role or seniority," said Barney Francis, managing director of Sky Sports.

Pistons Play Only Six in Loss After Apparent Player Protest

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The 76ers finally got even.

Elton Brand had 20 points and 17 rebounds, and the hard-charging Philadelphia 76ers reached .500 for the first time this season in a 110-94 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Friday night.

Led by a resurgent Brand, the Sixers have rebounded from a 3-13 start to get to 29-29. Coach Doug Collins had already in his first season led the Sixers to more wins than they had a year ago. The Sixers have won 12 of 16 and are in seventh place in the Eastern Conference -- with the sixth-place Knicks in sight.

"This is a great night for our team and our fans," Collins said.

It was a clunker of a day for the Pistons.

Detroit used six players in the latest embarrassment for the fallen franchise. Several Pistons skipped at least part of Friday's shootaround and sat out their third straight loss.

Tayshaun Prince, Tracy McGrady, Ben Wallace and Rodney Stuckey did not start. Coach John Kuester wasn't around for the finish -- he was ejected in the second quarter after he was whistled for two quick technical fouls arguing a non-call.

US Coach Bob Bradley Begins Building National Team Foundation Against Chile

us chile usa chile u.s. national team soccer juan agudelo teal bunburyCARSON, Calif. -- For the casual fan of the U.S. national team, Saturday's match against Chile probably seemed a bit unusual. Where was Landon Donovan? Why wasn't the game on English-language TV? Who the heck is Mikkel Diskerud, and why is everyone calling him "Mixx?"

The simple answers to these questions are that Landon Donovan is in Los Angeles preparing for the upcoming MLS season.

The game wasn't on television because ESPN is contracted to show a certain number of matches annually and this one wasn't selected.

And Mikkel Diskerud is a promising 20-year-old midfielder from Oslo whose American mother (hence his U.S. passport) nicknamed him "Mixx" when he was a child.

The reason for all of this confusion? The game against Chile was basically a scrimmage -- the international soccer equivalent of a JV game. Which is why Landon Donovan was given the night off. And why ESPN chose not to air the game. And why Diskerud got the start instead of Michael Bradley or Clint Dempsey or Stuart Holden.

This song is especially appropriate on a morning that most likely would have been a snow day had I not already had the day off (thanks to all of the presidents of times gone by). London duo Labyrinth Ear got some nice blog attention last summer with their sort of chill electronic version of that “I’m wishing for the one I love” song from Snow White (yes, like the original Disney cartoon Snow White) aptly named “Snow White”. Grizzlies Owner Heisley Admits Thabeet Trade Could 'Come Back to Haunt Us'

Conventional basketball wisdom dictates you usually don't trade a 7-footer taken with the No. 2 pick just 1 ½ years after he's drafted.

The Grizzlies did that at Thursday's trade deadline when center Hasheem Thabeet was sent to Houston in a deal that bought back to Memphis popular forward Shane Battier.

It's true the 7-3 Thabeet wasn't playing much for the Grizzlies and already was being regarded by many as a bust. But Memphis owner Michael Heisley admitted in an extensive interview with FanHouse he has reservations about dispatching Thabeet.

"I don't know whether it's a mistake (having drafted Thabeet),'' Heisley said. "I look at (giving up Thabeet) with great concern. ... I think Houston needs a good center and I think that Thabeet could come back to haunt us. ... Absolutely, it's hard for us (to trade Thabeet). It's extremely hard. ... If he develops, he's going to be a big factor in this league and we might be eating our words.''

Heisley, though, said Memphis brass determined the risk was worth taking for several reasons. The Grizzlies have a strong center in Marc Gasol, limiting how much Thabeet has been able to play, they believe Battier can help their playoff run and Battier is extremely popular in Memphis, having played for the Grizzlies from 2001-06 before being shipped to Houston.

"To tell you the honest truth, we wanted Shane,'' Heisley said of the trade made between two teams in the Southwest Division. "So you can't have everything you want in this world. We had other options (in trading Thabeet), but we wanted Shane. ... (Battier is) probably one of the most popular players we've ever had.''

Heisley said Battier was dealt with Ish Smith for Thabeet, forward DeMarre Carroll and a lottery-protected future first-round pick. Thabeet had played in high school in Houston.

Carling Cup Final: Birmingham City Triumph Over Arsenal as Szczesny Blunders

Birmingham City have been gifted the Carling Cup by Arsenal

In the 89th minute of the encounter, with the score 1-1, a routine long ball came bouncing in towards the Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny. Defender Laurent Koscielny looked like he was going to play the ball, but left it for the charging Szczesnywho fumbled it into the path of Birmingham substitute Obafemi Martins.

The striker made no mistake in tapping the ball into the empty net from ten yards out, launching a raucous celebration from the Birmingham faithful.

Arsenal was left shattered, and stoppage time passed without the Gunners mounting a threat. As Birmingham celebrated a hard-earned victory, Arsenal players dropped to the ground in despair.

The shock goal from the mix-up came against the run of play, as Arsenal had ratcheted up their attack in search for the winner. Birmingham looked pushed to the brink, but were determined to fight.

Centre back Roger Johnson was limping noticeably, and it appeared as if the Gunners' pace had finally broken the underdogs at Wembley; they were struggling to keep up.

Birmingham, however, had played a determined game throughout. They were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty after only two minuteswhen the linesman incorrectly ruled Lee Bowyer offside. Before play was stopped, in the process of rounding Szczesny he was clearly brought down illegally.

Nevertheless, the Blues opened the scoring in the 28th minute when the tall and powerful Nikola Zigic headed home from short-range off a set-piece.

Arsenal responded quickly, however, with a great play from Andrei Arshavin to get to the byline and then cross it back to Robin Van Persie, who peeled off his man to produce a wonderful finishfalling away from goal.

The teams went to the half tied 1-1, and it was Birmingham who came closest to scoring after the break.

After a blocked shot from distance, the ball fell to Keith Fahey who produced a rocket from 20 yards out that had Szczesny beat, but the ball clamored off the inside of the post, and was eventually cleared by the exposed Arsenal defense.

The Gunners went on the attack as full-time neared, with Birmingham keeper Ben Foster put to the test.

On a counter-attack, Samir Nasri's shot was saved by the England international; before he produced fine stops on shots from Niklas Bendtner, and then Nasri again.

With Arsenal enjoying the most consistent possession they'd had all game, they were gutted by the final goal.

Foster was named Man of the Match for his vital role in keeping the match 1-1, while his counterpart, Szczesny, will be remembered in infamy.

The win was a special one for the Birmingham side, as they had shown a tremendous amount of grit. Their fans were in jubilation, a celebration only surpassed by that of the men in blue on the pitch.

It would be harsh on Arsenal to dismiss their performance as complacent.

They were set on winning this trophy for the club and their fans, and it showed in their tempo. The Gunners were playing without their superstar and captain, Cesc Fabregas; as well as injured winger Theo Walcott, two vital components to the Arsenal attack.

Fabregas's absence was most notable in the attacking third for Arsenal, where through large parts of the game they lacked the creativity to break down Birmingham's stubborn defense.

This has been the case all season for the Gunners when Fabregas isn't on the field, and it underscores what a brilliant player he is. His replacement, Czech international Tomas Rosicky had a poor performance, as he had a couple of great chances to score that he squandered. He also lacked the right chemistry with the in-form Robin Van Persie, whom Fabregas has made an art of supplying throughout their tenure at Arsenal together.

The blow will be hard to stomach for Arsenal and their fans because the six-year trophy drought seemed destined to end today at Wembley. The crushing manner in which they lost the game has the potential to wreak havoc on the minds of the young squad.

Szczesny, only 20, will remember this blunder for the rest of his career.

He should be consoled by the fact that he has generally played very well this season, and seems poised to have a fine career for Arsenal.

On the upside, Arsenal are still in good position to win three other trophies this year. The keys will be staying healthy and overcoming this psychological setback.

If they can turn the sting of defeat into a greater will to achieve, then there's no reason they can't catch a less-than-convincing Manchester United side atop the table. But they must do so quickly, as a very pivotal two weeks lie aheadwith potential cup clashes away to both Barcelona and Manchester United in the Champions League and FA Cup, respectively if Arsenal can first get by Leyton Orient on Wednesday.

Birmingham deserved their upset win today, and while it looks like this Arsenal side still may prosper, today was simply not their day.

New York Knicks: Their 5 Worst Losses This Season That Should Have Been Wins

If LeBron James left Cleveland because he didn’t think much of his supporting cast, he’s clearly not watching the Cavaliers play the New York Knicks.

For the second time this season, the Cavaliers defended their home court against New York, winning 115-109 on Friday night. Antawn Jamison led Cleveland with 28 points, while J.J. Hickson went for 24 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks. New York was out-rebounded 62-42.

With Philadelphia and Indiana right behind the Knicks in the Eastern Conference standings, this was a game the Knicks had to have before going up against Miami. Because this loss wasn’t depressing enough, it got this writer thinking about what other losses may come back to haunt the Knicks.

MLB 2011: Power Ranking the Best Leadoff Men in Baseball

What makes a great leadoff hitter?

Getting on base at a high rate is a good start, but everyone in the lineup is expected to do that. A good eye always helps, but he shouldn't be afraid to swing. Speed is a bonus, but some of the fastest players in baseball hit in the bottom of the batting order.

The truth is that there's no formula for the perfect leadoff hitter. Every player approaches the game differently and every team has a different offensive style. But that doesn't diminish the importance of the leadoff man.

These 30 hitters are their team's respective table-setters, responsible for getting their club off to a good start and rallying their teammates to victory. They may not get the attention of the star slugger or the ace of the pitching staff, but a good leadoff hitter can be the difference between a postseason berth and an October date with the couch.

So here are my rankings of baseball's top leadoff men and what to expect from them next season. As always, share your thoughts below.

MLB Spring Training 2011: Josh Outman Leading A's Fifth Starter Competition

Nearly two years removed from season-ending Tommy John surgery that interrupted his very promising rookie season, Josh Outman is back on the mound for the Oakland Athletics in spring training, and it appears he is ready to pick up right where he left off.

In his first live action during a scrimmage game against his own teammates Outman looked like his old self pitching against his teammates.

While limited to only 20 pitches during the intra-squad game, Outman allowed only one hit on a Coco Crisp single up the middle. Pitching at only a 90 percent exertion level, Outman was reaching 92 MPH on the radar gun.

More importantly though, he is pitching completely pain-free.

"After everything he's been through, it's good to see him do that," A's manager Bob Geren said. "His velocity was pretty good, and he had a pretty good changeup."

During his rookie season in 2009, Outman posted a 4-1 record with a 3.48 ERA and a 7.1 K/9 ratio in 12 starts. This season Outman is trying to earn the fifth starter spot in the Oakland A's extremely talented rotation.

Outman's primary competition this spring, Rich Harden, has already suffered a setback giving Outman an increasing edge in the competition. While his velocity is down a little from where he was in 2009, Outman still is proving to be a very effective pitcher.

"If I can stay in the low 90s, that's all I can really ask for," Outman said. "Two years [since surgery] will be June, and they say that's when your velocity comes back. Hopefully, by after the All-Star break, I can get back into the middle/upper 90s where I was able to get to.

"Even if I stay 90-93 right now, I can pitch with that and I can get people out with that. I'm happy."

Unlike Harden, Outman has felt great all spring while showing off his surgically repaired elbow.

"I feel pretty comfortable with my elbow [being] recovered and I'm ready to compete in games," Outman said. "I'm not going to say I wasn't a little nervous, just getting back out there and facing major league hitters again. As far as worrying about my health, I don't have any issue with that."

If both Harden and Outman emerge from spring training healthy the A's will have six major league starters they can add to the roster (with Brandon McCarthy, Tyson Ross and Bobby Cramer also major league quality options).

Perhaps the only thing that didn't look the Josh Outman of 2009—his socks.

The clubhouse attendant forgot to have Outman's preferred green stir-ups available to him, prompting Outman to wear yellow knee-high socks with the green stir-up stripe dyed into the sock.

"I hadn't done this in so long that they forgot to get me stirrups," he said. "That's why I'm wearing these Little League socks."

Big South Conference Tournament: Why VMI Can Punch a March Madness Ticket

VMI came from behind to defeat the Winthrop Eagles on Saturday night and secure the fourth-seed and a home tournament game.

It's not a surprise to see VMI leading the nation in scoring with their all-out offense, but the main difference between this year and years past is their ability to play defense.

Freshmen acquisitions of Rodney Glasgow and D.J. Covington have proved to be the difference in the team's late season success. After starting their conference record at 5-8, VMI won five consecutive Big South games and finished with a conference record of 10-8.

D.J. Covington has proven to be one of the conference's best defenders in the paint, and Glasgow has stepped in as the team's point guard, a position that has been lacking over the past few years.

VMI would not be in the top half of the seeding if it wasn't for senior Austin Kenon who has caught fire in the past few weeks averaging over 20 points a game. They are one of the only teams in the conference to enter the Advance Auto Parts Big South Tournament on a winning streak.

If they can continue their dominating defensive play, they will be well on their way towards their first Big South Championship.

VMI has been close to winning the tournament in past years but never actually won the big game. They appeared in the final game against Winthrop in 2007 and Radford in 2008, but came up short both times.

This year, it would appear that Coastal Carolina would have a guaranteed ticket to the NCAA Tournament, but due to the loss of their two best players to suspension and injury, they've opened the door to the other teams in the conference.

Liberty—their closest competitor—has played poorly down the stretch and the only two teams that have played well at season's end have been UNC Asheville and VMI.

Look for these two teams to continue their success as we enter March Madness.

MacDec provides another way to combine keyboard and Magic Trackpad

There's a growing number of devices that allow Mac users to combine their keyboards and Magic Trackpads into a single unit. Steve Sande took a look at TwelveSouth's MagicWand not long ago.

But if you have the money to spare and want something really sleek -- and expensive -- thodio will sell you the MacDec, a thick slab made out of wood or acrylic that will hold your devices securely in place with the aid of eight powerful magnets. The wood MacDecs run roughly $138 and the acrylic around $165 -- the original prices are in Euros.

Unlike the MagicWand, which places the Magic Trackpad to the side of the keyboard, the MacDec orders them in a laptop-like configuration, actually in the shape of a 15-inch MacBook Pro.

Charlie Davies Comes Full Circle in Long Road to Recovery

charlie daviesWASHINGTON, DC -- Charlie Davies was offered a tryout by D.C. United because the club was atop Major League Soccer's allocation priority list.

The expansion franchises in Portland (Kenny Cooper) and Vancouver (Jay DeMerit) had made their choices, and United was next in line thanks to its wooden spoon performance in 2010.

On the surface, it's that simple. It's in the rules.

But Davies, who credits religion for some of the strength required to overcome the horrific litany of injuries suffered in that 2009 car accident, might argue that greater forces are at play.

It was in the Washington area, of course, where the crash occurred -- two nights before the national team's World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica and about four miles from RFK Stadium, where Davies was introduced as United's newest player on Wednesday.
