Lighting the World's Most Famous Tree on 'Christmas in Rockefeller Center' (VIDEO)

Filed under:

Lighting the World's Most Famous Tree on 'Christmas in Rockefeller Center'When it comes to Christmas trees, bigger isn't necessarily better. In this case, though, bigger is a pretty big deal.

Lighting the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center in Manhattan is a eight-decade-old tradition, dating back to 1931. The ritual itself had humble beginnings. On Christmas Eve, 1931, Depression-era builders stopped their work on Rockefeller Plaza, gathering together to decorate a 20-foot fir tree with strings of cranberries, paper garlands and -- touchingly -- a few tin cans.

Tonight, the 78th official ceremony was broadcast live during the 'Christmas in Rockefeller Center' event (Mon., 8PM ET on NBC). Performers at this year's show included Susan Boyle, Josh Groban, and Jessica Simpson. But the real star, of course, is the world-famous tree itself. ... Speaking of stars, this year's tree is topped with one made of Swarovski crystal. The star decoration measures over nine feet in diameter; it weighs 550 pounds. Certainly a far cry from paper and tin cans.

Mongoliad apps out now on iPhone and iPad

We've been following the Mongoliad project by author Neal Stephenson ever since it was announced last May, and the iOS apps for the project have finally been released on the iOS App Store. The apps are free, but you'll remember that the project is actually a subscription-based universe of fiction, so while there are some free things to read in there, you'll have to buy a membership or a subscription if you want access to everything. You can do so from directly within the app -- it's about seven bucks for more than a novel's worth of material, so it's not a bad price at all.

If you already have a subscription, the app will let you access the content you've got from anywhere, and/or download them so you can read offline. Even if you're not a fan of Neal Stephenson (and you probably should be -- read Snow Crash, and then read The Diamond Age, because they're both terrific), the model itself is quite interesting. We've seen a few other publications decide to publish subscription content on iOS devices, but this is the first time we've seen a fiction author publish a novel as a subscription app. It's the kind of model that should really appeal to authors with the right audience -- we'll have to see what the response to The Mongoliad turns out to be.

Miami Heat's big-name trio to make temperatures soar | Robert Schatten

Capture of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh was a masterstroke, and now the South Beach franchise aim to cash in

The Miami Heat are having a summer to remember down on South Beach. It all started with their stupendous coup de grace in the first week of free agency, when the Heat managed to convince LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh ? three standout players among a stellar cast who were available this summer ? to agree to smaller contracts than they could have commanded.

In a league where money often has as much pulling power as location, James, Bosh and Wade ? who excelled together on the victorious USA team at the 2008 Olympics ? agreed to take $2-3m less per year than the maximum salary to play together in Miami.

Over the past two years, Miami, like many teams in the NBA, have planned meticulously for this summer. The possibility of landing one or more of the megastars on offer encouraged several teams to build a roster designed to disintegrate at the close of the 2009-10 season.

Entering the free-agency period, the Heat had only its two second-year players, Mario Chalmers and Michael Beasley, still under contract for 2010-11. On 1 July, the contracts of the rest of the Heat roster expired. The departure of the erratic Beasley, offloaded to Minnesota for future draft picks, shrank the payroll to just $2m. James, Wade and Bosh took up a combined $42m of the NBA's $56.1m salary cap, leaving the Heat, and revered general manager Pat Riley, to assemble a supporting cast on a shoestring budget.

Once the big-name trio had committed, and with Chalmers already under contract, Riley had around $15m remaining in available salary ? not much to recruit eight or nine players capable of helping carry the championship to South Beach. Initially there seemed little action to follow up the 'Miami Thrice's' arrival, but towards the end of last week, the Heat began reeling in new signings with remarkable speed.

The first to announce his commitment, unsurprisingly, was seven-year Heat player Udonis Haslem. A South Florida native Haslem, who like Wade has spent his entire NBA career on South Beach, received more lucrative offers from elsewhere but was always likely to return to the Heat. He has held an important position in the franchise over the last four years as the lynchpin and captain of a young, developing team, and won the hearts of Miami's fans in the process.

With Haslem's signature secured, the Heat stepped up their efforts to bolster the roster. On Friday and Saturday, they announced the arrivals of sharpshooter Mike Miller and centre Zydrunas Ilgauskas, signings which ate up the rest of the salary cap.

Under NBA rules, Miami could now only offer the veterans' minimum contract (which the league sets, and which increases according to how many years a player has been in the NBA) and could no longer afford to keep several promising young players, notably Daequan Cook and Dorell Wright.

Centres Joel Anthony and Dexter Pittman were signed to minimum deals on Sunday and the spree continued this week with forwards Jamaal Magloire, James Jones and Juwan Howard, and point guard Carlos Arroyo.

This week's arrivals go a long way to completing Miami's likely rotation for the forthcoming season. Guard/forward Miller, who will play a key role as the most respected three-point shooter on the roster, roomed with Haslem in college and was recruited by Wade. More than a few NBA coaches will likely turn to zone defences to keep James and Wade from penetrating inside and getting to the basket, which means Miller's ability to hit perimeter shots could be crucial to Miami's fortunes. James Jones, another wing player with a reputation as a three-point shooter, will perform a similar role so long as he can stay healthy, a major concern in the last two years.

Ilgauskas, the 7ft 3in Lithuanian who has spent all 11 of his NBA seasons with Cleveland, figures to become the starting centre for the Heat, a role he was occupying quite capably for the Cavaliers until Shaquille O'Neal's arrival last season. He will be backed up at the centre spot by Anthony, with second-round draft pick Pittman providing extra depth. Arroyo will compete with Chalmers for the starter's position at point guard, just as he did last season.

Magloire, who featured in just 21 games for Miami during an injury-hampered 2009-10 campaign, is on the roster as a backup option in case more than one of the others goes down with an injury. Howard proved last season with the injury-depleted Trail Blazers that he can still produce a solid contribution when called on, but at almost 37 years of age and entering his 17th NBA campaign, is seen as more of a solid veteran presence to bring experience to the dressing room.

On Draft night, the Heat made what could the most under-rated selection by taking multi-talented but fragile forward Da'Sean Butler in the second round. If Butler can prove his fitness, he has enough potential to be given a roster spot and the time to improve. That would take the Heat to 14 committed players and unless Riley has trades in mind, that will probably be the end of things.

In principle, the Heat shouldn't struggle to gel this roster. It has all the necessary components in place. The team is mostly assembled way ahead of training camp so time is on their side. The three superstars, James, Wade and Bosh, have proved before that they can perform spectacularly in tandem. In Haslem and Howard, Miami have proven leaders; Anthony, Ilgauskas and Miller fill the need any team has for a shot-blocker, rebounder and shooter, respectively. Jones, when healthy, is an extra threat on the wings, and Chalmers is an improving young point guard who will contribute energy and enthusiasm.

All Miami could want for now would be some extra depth at the guard spots, and a solid perimeter defender to take some of the workload off Wade and James. On paper, this team is certainly strong enough to challenge for a title, if only because there doesn't seem to be a defensive scheme which can handle the "Miami Thrice". As people pointed out when Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce united in Boston three years ago, you can't double-team three players.

Rashad McCants Joins Texas Legends

Rashad McCantsRashad McCants, the 14th overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, has reported to the NBA Development League's Texas Legends and should be in uniform Tuesday when the team hosts the San Antonio Spurs-owned Austin Toros for its home opener.

McCants, whose rights were acquired by the Legends due to a new D-League rule that allows NBA teams the ability to allocate three players cut during training camp to their D-League affiliate, missed the first three games of the Legends' schedule while weighing his other options that were rumored to include more lucrative overseas offers.

Typically playing outside of the U.S. ends in a case of "out of sight, out of mind," however, and McCants is currently committed to returning to the NBA, seeing the NBA Development League as the quickest way possible.

"I think that playing in the D-League is the quickest option to return to the NBA," McCants told FanHouse. "My decision to stay in the states and enter the D-League was solely based upon my family needs and working with the underprivileged youth and misunderstood kids."

Nicholls

So you?re leaving
In the morning
On the early train
I could say everything?s alright
I could pretend and say goodbye
You?ve got your ticket
Got your suitcase
Got your leaving smile
I could say that?s the way it goes
I could pretend and you won?t know
That I was lying
?Cos I can?t stop loving you
I can?t stop loving you
No, I can?t stop loving you
Though I try
We took a taxi
To the station
Not a word was said
I saw you walk across the road
For maybe the last time, but I don?t know
Feeling humble
I heard a rumble
From the railway track
And when I hear that whistle blow
I?ll walk away and you won?t know
That I was lying
?Cos I can?t stop loving you
I can?t stop loving you
No, I can?t stop loving you
Though I try
?Cos I can?t stop loving you
I can?t stop loving you
I just can?t stop loving you
Why should I try
Why should I try

'Gossip Girl' Season 4, Episode 10 Recap (VIDEO)

Taylor Momsen['Gossip Girl' - 'Gaslit']

Greetings, Gossips, welcome to a scandalous new week on the Upper East Side. I don't know about you, but I've been missing my weekly dose of crazy, and no show gives with both hands quite like 'Gossip Girl'.

'Tis the season for giving thanks and getting gifts, and Serena van der Woodsen's checkered past is the gift that just keeps on giving.

Not only were her previous sexploits enough to convince all of her nearest and dearest that she's a drug-addled nympho with suicidal tendencies (two outta three ain't bad?) but the true mastermind behind the scurrilous scheme managed to get away scot-free -- at least until Queen B. and Lonely Boy get their way. Hell hath no fury like a Waldorf scorned, and now that Little J. has gotten herself out of the firing line, Blair's gunning for Juliet.

LeBron James joins the Miami Heat

? James leaves the Cleveland Cavaliers after seven years
? Owner accuses James of 'shameful display of selfishness'

LeBron James has announced that he will sign for the Miami Heat. Bringing an end to weeks of speculation, James made the announcement live in an hour-long TV special, revealing that "this fall I am going to take my talents to South Beach and join the Miami Heat". The deal is expected to make James, 25, one of the richest sportsmen in the world and could earn him over $100m in salary alone.

James, who plays as a small forward, was a free agent after spending seven years with the Cleveland Cavaliers, his hometown club. As one of the biggest names in basketball, he received offers from several clubs, including the New York Knicks and the Chicago Bulls. However, he opted to sign for the team he believed will give him "the best opportunity to win and to win now and to win in the future. Winning is a huge thing for me".

He was named NBA Rookie of the Year in 2003-04 and NBA Most Valuable Player in both 2008-09 and 2009-10. In 2007 he took Cleveland to the NBA Finals, where they were beaten by 4-0 by the San Antonio Spurs. However, he never managed to lead the Cavaliers to an NBA title, and he cited his belief that Miami have "a great chance of winning and winning for multiple years" as his primary reason for joining them. He will join up with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, who committed to the Heat on Wednesday, and together, James predicted, they will make a "real good team".

Speculation concerning the destination of 'King James', as he has been nicknamed, has dominated the media coverage in the US over recent weeks. It reached such a fever pitch that it even impacted on the options market, with interest exploding in Madison Square Garden options earlier in the day as speculation linked James with the New York Knicks, owned by MSG. President Barack Obama, a Chicago Bulls fan, joined the debate by suggesting James "would fit in pretty well" at the Bulls. However, the hype and publicity surrounding his announcement turned the move into a drawn-out saga, and many will be relieved that the 'The Summer of LeBron' is finally over.

A number of other deals have been announced today - deadline day for free agents - including four-time NBA All-Star Joe Johnson signing a six-year, $123.7m deal with the Atlanta Hawks. Two-time All-Star forward Carlos Boozer joined Chicago Bulls in a sign-and-trade deal with Utah Jazz for a reported $75m over five years. Jazz spokesman Jonathan Rinehart said Utah sent him along with a future protected second-round pick to the Bulls for a trade exception. In a busy day for the Bulls, they received the rights to the Washington Wizards' Belarusian Vladimir Veremeenko in exchange for guard Kirk Hinrich and the draft rights of first-round pick Kevin Seraphin.

Rudy Gay leaves it late as Memphis Grizzlies defeat Miami Heat

? Gay lands buzzer-beater to end Memphis's losing streak
? Toronto Raptors land Peja Stojakovic in five-man trade

Rudy Gay landed a 15-foot buzzer-beater over LeBron James to end the Memphis Grizzlies' five-game losing streak with a 97-95 win over Miami Heat on Saturday.

Zach Randolph led the Grizzlies (5-9) with 21 points and 13 rebounds, Mike Conley had 16 points and Gay added 15 as Memphis snapped the Heat's three-game winning streak.

"This was the most unified we've been," said Grizzlies head coach Lionel Hollins. "That's how you win tough, close games, everybody rooting for each other, everybody picking each other up."

It was a tight contest throughout with the teams trading the lead constantly in a back-and-forth second half.

"That's a tough loss," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We just could not find a way to get over the hump."

James and Chris Bosh carried the Heat (8-5) in the absence of Dwyane Wade, who did not play due to a left wrist injury. James scored a game high 29 points and added 11 assists while Bosh scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds.

Eddie House came off the bench to score 20 points, including six three-pointers, but there was more bad news for the Heat when the forward Udonis Haslem collided with Randolph late in the third quarter and was carried off the court.

"It's huge," James said of Haslem's injury. "He's like our heart of our team. He's our power. He's our pride. He brings everything every night. Size never really matters to him. He always plays above his height, plays above his weight."

The New Orleans Hornets and the Toronto Raptors completed a five-player trade featuring the former All Star Peja Stojakovic on Saturday.

The Hornets acquired the point guard Jarrett Jack, Australian center David Andersen and guard Marcus Banks from the Raptors in exchange for the guard Jerryd Bayless and Stojakovic as well as cash considerations.

"We are excited about the players acquired today and feel that our short-term and long-term goals will benefit from this move," said the Hornets general manager Dell Demps.

"Peja has been a valued contributor as a Hornet for years and we wish both Peja and Jerryd all the best in their future and thank them for their recent contributions in helping us get off to a strong start."

Stojakovic is in his 13th season in the NBA, averaging double figures in scoring in all but one season with a career best of 24.2 points a game in 2003-04 when he was selected as a second-team All-Star. In six games this season he has averaged 7.5 points.

Wade Phillips: 'I Still Want to Coach'

Filed under:

Wade Phillips was fired by the Cowboys in early November, and gave his first public comments since the firing on Saturday. A television station in Dallas caught up with Phillips at a high school playoff game.

Phillips, pointing to Texas high school football as "where I started," reiterated his love of the game. He didn't have anything to say about the firing, saying, "You know that's past. I'm looking forward." But he did speak about his potential future in the NFL. Namely, he'd still like to have one.

"I still want to coach, so we'll see what happens," he said.

PwnageTool offers risky iPhone 3G, 3GS unlock

Those eager to carrier-unlock their iPhone 3G/3GS under the latest firmware (and only the latest firmware) have an option, if the risk of using iPad code does not dissuade them. The iPhone Dev Team has released a new version of PwnageTool that uses the 6.15.00 baseband from iPad firmware 3.2.2, which runs happily on the iPhone 3G and 3GS, as a result of all three devices using the very same Infineon radio chip.

This unlock isn't for the "weekend warrior." A mistake could render your device unable to execute a full restore ever again. In addition, Apple Store employees will frown upon you if you approach them for advice with an iPhone running iPad code, and that's just the beginning. The more patient among us can wait until the team releases an official bundle.

Colorado Rapids' 'Dirty Desire to Win' Leads to First MLS Title

mls cup colorado rapidsTORONTO -- The Colorado Rapids' dramatic run through the MLS Cup playoffs presents a convincing argument for the power of intangibles in sports.

No one could argue that they were the league's best team this year. The Rapids finished the regular season 12-8-10, good for fifth in the Western Conference and seventh overall. They won just one of their final four games heading into the playoffs, for which they hadn't qualified since 2007.

And yet, the whole was far greater than the sum of those numbers.

"For anyone out there who didn't back us, I pity you," coach Gary Smith said following his team's 2-1 defeat of FC Dallas in Sunday's MLS Cup Final. "If any money I had, if I knew that every time a side walked out on the pitch they were going to give absolutely everything they got, you ain't far away."

You said "messy", right? If so, you just came up with the exact word Hal used to describe the then-pending Jeter talks on Michael Kay's radio show in October.

In case you're still in an A.J. Burnett-induced coma, here's a quick rundown of the events of the past seven days:

Sunday: Jeter's agent, Casey Close, makes the calculated decision to bring negotiations into the public forum. He laments the Yankees' "baffling" bargaining strategy.

Tuesday: The Yankees lose containment on Hank Steinbrenner when an AP reporter reaches him via telephone. “As much as we want to keep everybody, we've already made these guys very, very rich, and I don’t feel we owe anybody anything monetarily. Some of these players are wealthier than their bosses.”

Ladies and gentleman, Hank Steinbrenner!

Meanwhile, Brian Cashman — obviously rankled by Close's comments — challenges Jeter. “We’ve encouraged him to test the market and see if there’s something he would prefer other than this,” Cashman told ESPN. “If he can, fine. That’s the way it works.”

Translation: I have a straight flush. You're holding a 3, 7, 8 and two joker cards. Now what?

Wednesday:
A Boston-area blogger named Sully writes that Jeter is overrated and shouldn't win Gold Gloves. Sully becomes the 20,000,000th person to use the internet to express this opinion. He is recognized with a $20 gift card for use at the Dunkin' Donuts in Medford.

Thursday:
Jeter has an outstanding Thanksgiving dinner with family and friends at his Tampa compound. Girlfriend Minka Kelly sits beside him, presumably in a form-fitting top and hot teacher glasses. Even in these uncertain times, the difference between his quality of life and yours is startling.

Friday: The Daily News reports Jeter had demanded a six-year, $150 million contract -- an average of $25 million a year -- from the Yankees, who have offered him three years at $15 million per. The New York Times reports a similar demand. Close's e-mail response: "The recently reported terms of our contract proposal are simply inaccurate."

This week will be an extremely important one in the negotiation process. The longer this drags out, the nastier this situation has the potential to become. Both sides made statements last week that poured accelerant on the fire. Another week of he said/she said could create an inferno neither side can control.

If both sides are smart, they should realize the time for posturing is over. We're nearly in December now. The winter meetings begin in a week and Cashman's attention should be squarely on acquiring Cliff Lee.

Speaking of Lee, if the Jeter talks get uglier, you have to imagine that would send a bad message to both the pitcher and that sweet angel of a woman he calls his wife. After all, would you want to get into bed with a team that was publicly dogging their biggest star since Mickey Mantle?

Full disclosure: I've been more on the organization's side on this. I believe three years for $45 million is more than fair compensation for a player with as many miles on the odometer as Jeter has.

That said, this is Derek Jeter we're talking about, so the Yankees are going to have to show some flexibility. That doesn't mean they need to roll over like they did in the A-Rod opt-out negotiations. That was like Briana Banks at the AVN awards-level flexibility.

We're talking a subtle bending of their thought process. Perhaps they take a page out of the A-Rod deal — please, one page only — and include some escalators that kick in at certain milestones. 3,000 hits, 3,500 hits, 2,000 runs. Nothing too crazy, just something that would theoretically take the contract into the $50-55 million range.

Everybody wins in that scenario. The Yankees wouldn't have to grossly overpay for Jeter's return, and Jeter can face the public without it seeming like he came crawling back.

Is it just me, or does this not seem like it should be so complicated?

There's a thin line between messy and ugly. The Yankees — and Jeter — would be wise not to cross it.

NBA Heated Homecoming: LeBron James and the Decision To Leave the Cleveland Cavs

With less than one week until LeBron James' heavily anticipated return to Cleveland in a Miami Heat jersey, I thought it necessary to reflect on the critical events that brought us here.

With Cleveland sports history being anything but a pleasant memory, the city of Cleveland was provided with their latest visual nightmare when LeBron James shared his future career plans with almost 10 million viewers around the country (five million of whom probably lied about not tuning in out of protest).

Capitalizing on national interest in his free agency, during a period where the free agency class read like a who's who of NBA all-stars, LeBron James and his friends (they're his friends!) opted to shoot a TV special, hosted by Jim Gray, where LeBron would announce where he would be playing next season.  The TV special, simply titled "The Decision," was harshly criticized before any decision was even made.

Viewed as egotistical and self-serving, LeBron and his team donating the advertisement proceeds for "The Decision" to charity couldn't diffuse growing criticism with how he was going about his business.

As James' critics grew louder and stronger, many of them did not hold back in discussing the negative implications of James' "Decision" TV special.

One of the more influential of said vocal critics, Orlando Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy, embodied the spirit of the LeBron James critic by insisting that he would not be tuning into ESPN with the rest of America to find out where LeBron James would be playing in the 2010-2011 NBA Season.

Despite LeBron's camp's best efforts to keep his future plans entirely secret, news began to break of James' intentions to sign with the Miami Heat before "The Decision" aired.

As tensions and anxiety began to rise in the city of Cleveland, the only possible plot twist in the growing saga of LeBron James' free agency that could have kept James from becoming the polarizing figure he is today would have been for LeBron James to announce he would be staying in Cleveland.

But what ensued served as yet another haunting moment in Cleveland sports lure, where heartbreak goes to thrive.

Announcing that he would be "taking [his] talents to South Beach," LeBron James' intentions of signing with the Miami Heat, thus joining perennial all-stars Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, instantaneously turned him into a pariah not only in the city of Cleveland, but around the world.

Suddenly, "The Decision" was viewed even more harshly by James' detractors (who had now been out in full force like piranhas in 3D) as James' hometown and former team had been subject to public humiliation by one of its own.

Charles Barkley was disturbed by "The Decision."  James' former Cleveland teammate Mo Williams contemplated retirement following the TV special.  Michael Jordan (who is often discussed in the same breath as LeBron James), took this opportunity to remind America of his accomplishments without the caliber of talent LeBron James had joined up with.

A heel turn seemed to commence, if you will, as the over-the-top nature of James' free-agency antics were easily comparable to professional wrestling.

Among those who LeBron and company had ticked off with the handling of his free agency plans, none were angrier and more incensed than Cavs owner Dan Gilbert, whose electronic tirade directed at James will be discussed in the third installment of Heated Homecoming.

Audio tool WireTap Anywhere hits v2.0

WireTap Anywhere 2.0

Ambrosia Software has released WireTap Anywhere 2.0, an upgrade to the company's professional audio routing and mixing software. Following up on the 2008 release of version 1.0, this upgrade claims that "hardwired is out; softwired is in" and allows users to capture, map, and independently adjust audio channels from any combo of applications or input devices and route it to the audio processor application of your choice.

Interested in recording your Skype conversations or sending some real-time QuickTime audio to a friend in iChat? WireTap Anywhere 2.0 can do that, allowing users the ability to mix and match any combinations into a single recording application. I have been a user of Audio Hijack Pro from Rogue Amoeba for years, and this looks like a solid competitor in the audio capture niche.

While you can try it out free for 30 days, WireTap Anywhere 2.0 for Mac OS X 10.5 or later is available to new users for US $129 or as a $69 upgrade for registered users of WireTap Anywhere 1.x.

What to Watch: TV Picks for November 29-December 5

Filed under:

Laura InnesMONDAY, NOVEMBER 29
'The Event' (9PM, NBC)
The biggest question surrounding the future of 'The Event' doesn't involve any of the show's storyline conspiracies; it's involves the actual future of the show, which, despite starting out as one of the most highly-anticipated series of the fall season, hasn't grabbed a large enough audience to reach the buzzworthy status of a '24' or 'Lost.' Still, with tonight's episode wrapping up the show's fall fun, here's hoping more viewers will sign on when 'The Event' returns in Feb, because, unlike some other similarly-themed drama series, there's been plenty of plot pay-offs on the show. As for tonight's fall finale, titled 'Everything Will change,' Sophia's suspicions about Thomas are confirmed when he reveals his new plan, President Martinez confronts the traitor and Sean and Leila have to deal with Dempsey's mercenaries while searching for Samantha.

'Chuck' - Mama Bartowski (guest star Linda Hamilton) shows up for Turkey Day dinner with her fam, while Morgan and Jeffster try to handle the Black Friday sale at the Buy More (8PM, NBC)

'Cake Boss' - Christmas Eve at Carlo's Bake Shop is all kinds of crazy, as Buddy and his staff try to fulfill orders for cookies, cakes, pies and Snowmen cupcakes for the bakery's many devoted customers (9PM, TLC) season 3 finale

'Gossip Girl' - Nate tries to get his parents to kiss and make up. Well, make up and not want to kill each other (9PM, The CW)

'In Treatment' - In tonight's back-to-back eps, first Paul is alarmed by Sunil's behavior at home, then he tries to comfort Frances as her sister's health worsens (9PM, HBO)

'CMA Country Christmas' - Rascal Flatts, Brad Paisley, Sugarland and Darius Rucker perform (9:30PM, ABC)

'The A-List' - Reichen's rethinking his decision to invite everyone to his fam's vacation home in Maine, as Rodiney and Austin tangle again, Austin won't remain quiet or dressed and the rest of his friends once again voice their disapproval about he and Rodiney as a couple (10PM, Logo) season 1 finale

'The Buried Life' - With $25,000 each in capital, the guys try to turn their stash into $1 million in a month (10PM, MTV) season 2 finale

Angry Birds hits 10 million iPhone downloads, coming to gaming consoles

Angry Birds creator Rovio has announced that the game has fetched a whopping 36 million downloads so far, including ten million paid downloads on the iOS platform alone. Those are some pretty incredible numbers -- there's no question at all that Angry Birds is as legendary an app on the iPhone as they come. In the larger mobile picture, Rovio still has a way to go -- the company itself wants to do 100 million downloads on the Android platform (where the game is a free download, and allows for premium purchases within the app), and even then will have to go a bit further to match up with Tetris' 100 million paid downloads on all mobile platforms.

But the game has definitely found its place in mobile app history already. Not only is there still that Christmas version planned for the coming holiday season, but Rovio has also announced that it will be releasing versions of the game for the Xbox 360, PS3, and the Wii sometime in 2011. Next year will bring another smartphone version, not a full sequel, but one where the pigs will apparently get a little more of the spotlight than the birds have given them so far. Talk about a bulldozer of an IP -- as big as this game has gotten, we haven't seen the last of it yet.

LeBron James and NBA player power | Nicolaus Mills

James's move to the Miami Heat with Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade heralds a new era. Now sport stars create their own teams

As someone who grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, I understand the anger of Cleveland fans over the decision of the city's superstar basketball player, LeBron James, to leave Ohio in order to join the Miami Heat. Cleveland's great institutions ? the Cleveland Orchestra, the Cleveland Art Museum, the Cleveland Clinic ? evoke pride but not much joy. Pro-sports are what make the news and unite Clevelanders.

When I was in junior high school, students were allowed to skip class and go to the opening day baseball game of the Cleveland Indians. All we had to do was show our teacher that our parents had bought us a ticket. Supporting the team, like paying local sales taxes, was looked on as a civic duty.

What is hard to understand in the case of LeBron James is the rage of Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert. "As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier," Gilbert wrote in an open letter to Cleveland fans. "This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown 'chosen one' sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn."

All this rage is coming from a man who regularly buys and sells players. On the surface, it seems little more than the hypocrisy of a businessman who had a deal fall through. But behind Gilbert's rage is more than hypocrisy. What infuriated Gilbert was that his money wasn't enough to retain the services of LeBron James. James and two other friends from the American Olympic basketball team, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade, decided that they wanted to become the nucleus of the best team in professional basketball.

Driving the three players was a perfectionist's view of the game itself. Their combined salaries ? each will receive more than $100m over the next six years ? were actually $15m less than they might have got through maximum deals with separate teams.

In basketball, as in most professional sports, it is owners working with general managers who are traditionally responsible for assembling a team. James, Bosh and Wade, in remaking the Miami Heat, were, in effect, saying that idea is old hat. Owners are not the only ones who can put together a great team. Talented players can do the same job just as well.

In one of the few businesses in America in which workers have greater name recognition than the executives who pay them, the result has been a sports revolution. Owners such as Dan Gilbert have now been warned: the old formula for making a profit based on fielding mediocre teams and charging high ticket prices is in jeopardy. Players who want to see their sport played at the highest level can create their own teams. The example set by James, Bosh and Wade can be duplicated by others.

Welcome to the TUAW Holiday Gift Guide! We've sorted the treasure from the junk and are serving up suggestions to make your holiday gift-giving a little easier.

Tomorrow officially begins the holiday shopping season in the States, and that means recycled air, linoleum floors and Orange Julius stains on your Quacker sweater. Of course I'm talking about the mall, which is best experienced in limited doses this time of the year. To help you get in and out, we've compiled some shopping apps to bring along with you. Here's what we found.

Best bet -- avoid the mall entirely

Some people enjoy the bustle of a holiday mall. Others prefer to stay at home. For the latter, we offer these handy apps.

Windowshop (Free, compatible with iPad)

Windowshop for iPad provides an iOS-friendly front end to Amazon. The entire selection is available and sorted by category: electronics, books, the Kindle store, movies, clothing ... 34 main categories in total, each with several sub-categories.
